Depends on what you like to eat really. You can get cheaper food, but poorer quality. If your not so fussy.
I spend alot of money on food, even though i try not to. Coles seems to be more expensive, but i prefer the meat there.
$250...to $300 a week on food normally, but $100 inbetween for bits and bats through the week. 4 of us. Not everyone will spend the same, we all want and eat differently.

When I lived in Adelaide I did all my grocery shopping at BiLo, much cheaper than Coles Over here I shop at Coles and I agree, the meat is better but we are going to try Supa IGA to see if it is anycheaper. Not keen on Woolies

Glad its not me either, I hate Woolie, but sadly where I live woollies is the only one easily available, & there is little Aldi, I rather go in there than woolies, I like Coles, but when I was in SA, I'd prefer to go to Food Land.
It cost about $350 a week, for family of 5.

It all depends on what you like, we still buy all uk names, ie Flora, Nescaffe, Heinz etc.
I find its the shampoo , deodorants etc that are more expensive. but not that much.

I spend about $350 all told a week including topping up on bread/milk etc during the week. I shop at Woolworths and haven't had any problems with meat quality at all.

Re: Cost of shopping?
Hi, please can you tell me if general supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths sell organic produce? Also do they have a good selection of fruit and veg, including Asian?
We live mainly on fresh produce and fish, soy, organic grains, etc., as I have a lot of food intolerances. Just wondering if I'd have to look for specialist stores or farmers' markets. We'd be living in Sydney, maybe lower north shore.
Thanks.

Depends where you are - they did a survey of grocey prices around the country. Surprise surprise Perth came out as most expensive.
Have to admit I'm lazy and use ezyshop.com.au sometimes
When I'm less tired I'll dig up the link.
Bring on Aldi to WA!

Good for you, some people have no choice but to save money. I spend $50 more if I shop at Coles, $200 a month is a stack of money to save for us.

Re: Cost of shopping?
If you can. Get out of the idea of shopping at supermarkets and aim for fresh food market. That of course depends on having one local.

Local butchers are the best for meat - always used one in the UK and continued once we arrived. Fresh veg, fruit is better at the local markets which are held every week, so the supermarket is only for the 'other' stuff. Would agree that spend around $250 per week for family of 4.

Re: Cost of shopping?
I do my shopping fortnightly as that's how often we get paid. I spend between $300 and $350 per fortnight at woolies (better meat here in SA at woolies, all the times I've bought from coles at least one piece has been off Might be just our local coles though)
I do buy milk every other day from our local foodland though ($3 something) and bread from my local bakers ($1.20 a loaf and better than the pre-packed stuff ).
Now I can drive I will be using the butchers and greengrocers more as they are far better than the supermarkets.
There's four of us and two dogs.
