Its an Admin job with Queensland Fire & Rescue......all those firemen...... near home, much better pay, people seem friendly and want me to use my brain (unlike the current lot). Start there the week we have our Night Out, so it'll be a real celebration

Congratulations on the job Polly,

I really don't know what to say guys (and gals) - you lot have put up with me griping about my current job, and you've spurred me on to get this one.
I didn't dare say anything about this one which I had the interview for last week, in case I jinxed it. They asked me to go back in on Monday this week - in the boss's words "we are a tight knit unit that works in a small space and we need to know we can all get on together". So I turned up on Monday, armed with a box of Jaffa Cakes as a bribe (
) turned out to be a birthday, and they had cakes too - real cakes, not stodgy stuff - and she offered me $36k ( currently on $29k) and a new desk!
Rang me today to say the paperwork is going through, and as I only need to give two weeks notice, I start on the 16th!
I did drop a couple of hints - well spotted Bundy!!!! - cos I was getting jittery, but today I got The Phone Call, and I must thank Michaela for starting the thread as I was a bit too shy to do it.
Anyone out there worrying about jobs - this is my third in nine months. The first was just a Christmas temp job, the second I have stuck out because it is easier to get a job when you are in one. The temptation to quit can be great, but my advice is - take any job that brings in money, it looks good on your resume, its Australian experience, and that matters. If one Aussie firm will employ you, another will take the risk. This is a temporary govt job, cos as yet my PR isn't granted, but the temp contract can be renewed, and eventually become a PR contract. There is a girl in my new unit, she has been "temporary" in govt jobs for 4 years, one contract leads to another.
Be prepared to step down a bit, and take a lower job, then work your way back up to the UK level. You have to prove yourself more here, because you are new, but most people will give you the chance.
I hope my experiences will help some of you. Determination is a good watch-word.
Now wheres that new bottle of Baileys..........enough of the serious stuff! Pics of firemen and hoses will be forthcoming when possible girls........in the meantime, here is my new mascot, Blazer the Koala!

Pollyana, you're a star! See, perserverance wins the day every time. Put those rose-tinters back on and relax. You're working with firemen, for more money than before. You have a desk. You have a koala mascot for god's sake! It's all good.

Nice one Polly. Your current boss sounds like a prick and doesn't deserve you. Good on you for sticking up for yourself.

Great news about the new job.
Do they do a fireman's calendar??? Now I'm sure you could do a roaring trade selling them to the girlies on here
Hope it all goes really well for you

They do have a calendar...haven't seen it yet, but its mentioned on the website. I shall take orders later in the year!
My old boss is not happy, to say the least, bur it doesn't bother me so much now when he gives me those scathing looks. Think Bondipom has the best description of him! 2 weeks to go....!!!!

No chance, he's into being medieval, and pretending he's some sort of chivalrous knight..............then he changes his personality at work into that of a control freak!

Tee hee, thanks mates, still have a big grin on my face!! My charming friendly boss has gone home in despair as he has three weeks to find someone to do my job, as well as the job his wife does - told me yesterday I would be doing both, while they are on hoilday........so I told him today "Heres my notice, I leave in 2 weeks!"

But I know what the QLD firefighters are like girlies.
I bought their Christmas Calender in 2002 (it was for charity)
And let me tell you Ladies, they are all VERY nice.
