Company backing???
I work for a big international company!
They have postings in Aus that I can apply for.
Does it really help with their backing (i.e. a job offer) or do I still have to get a permanent residency visa independantly?
Thanks

If they are prepared to sponsor you, you can go for a 4-year temporary business visa quite easily, or maybe even a permanent visa through some form of ENS (I think).

I wasn't aware of the 4-year temporary visa - I guess that would then make it easier to apply for permanent residency.
Has anyone experience of ENS?

this is what you need to look at Beano.
http://www.immi.gov.au/migration/emp...ex.htm#summary
You could go on the temp and apply for PR whilst in Aus.

A 4 year temporary visa does not make any difference in sponsoring for an ENS permanent visa. You can sponsor an offshore person for ENS directly.
There are a number of significant risks and disadvantages of a 457 visa. If you do come here in that capacity, I would say be aware of these, and have a PR plan in place.
Agents in Australia often see people on 457 visas whose companies have promised ENS and not delivered.
ENS itself is a tricky area and the visa application process does need professional advice to get it right first time.
The other option is to go for points tested migration. Working in Australia in a skilled occupation on a 457 visa for 6 months before you apply gives you 5 bonus points. If you have a MODL nominated occupation, a job offer is worth extra points - not otherwise. Aside from this, there is no special preference in the points test for 457 visa holders.

Thanks
outstanding info from you all.
I still dont quite see how ENS works though!
I assumed everyone had to pass the points test in some form or another!

I think there may be some sort of points table used by DIMIA (Not sure but seem to remember a figure of 70 being quoted once) but it doesn't seem to be discussed in the same way as for skilled visas.
The main thing with these visas is the case put by the Sponsor and individual to support why you should be allowed PR. It is usually a lengthy procedure.

Re: Company backing???
You assumed incorrectly. ENS/RSMS visas are not points tested, but there are other requirements which can be tricky.
There are two components of the application process: approval of the job position, and the visa application itself. Visa application process is usually quick (unless there's a special reason like a background check from a country where things take ages), the approval of the job nomination may be quick or slow depending on a range of factors.
I suggest you start at the DIMIA page explaining these visas:
