It has nothing to do with keeping things clean and tidy, well I guess if you house was like a show home without a crumb on the floor then yes I agree. I dont know what it is like in Sydney but I would guess that every house up here would have cockroaches in it, lots of cockroaches.

The clean thing is a bit of a myth. They're more interested in water than food. If they're living in the walls they'll come out occasionally.

Exactly, this idea that they only invade dirty houses is absurd.

I once read that every house in Australia has thousands of them. Although they are attracted to food they will eat literally anything.

Ok, so whether they like clean or dirty homes I don't know, but I should point out that my house is clean!! I don't live in some kind of filthy pit in the arse of Sydney, it's a perfectly nice, old terraced house in Glebe thank you very much and it's nice and clean and tidy!!

As I mentioned, we don't have dozens of roaches crawling up and down the walls, we had a few and have found some dead ones (about one a day for a while, now far fewer) but it was the three in one night that prompted me to post as I was worried it was going to be a bigger problem. Typically we haven't seen any since then...I guess I'll monitor the situation and if they return i'll be getting on to the landlord to get the professionals in. Just one more thing to deal with in the neverending 'list of things to do and things to get used to in Australia'

*sigh*

Sounds to me like you have a Huntsman helping out in the roach extermination plan...

Could be, there was a decent sized one in the bedroom on Christmas Eve (which sending us running away screaming like girls...) which vanished and which we told ourselves had left of it's own accord and DEFINITELY isn't living under the bed.....

they are quite placid, and keep themselves to themselves. I would rather have a Huntsman than a plurality of roaches!

Clean and DRY and sealed/screened. Not even ants can get inside.

Re: Cockroaches...

If they're really that bad, pay the $200 or so and get a professional bug man out to spray the entire house. Should be good for up to 12 months.

We had ours done before we moved in (due to paranoid wife), and 9 months later, the only roaches we've seen are generally dead ones or ones in the the final hours of their lives!

(also not seen any dodgy looking spiders- touch wood!)

Yeah, if it comes to it we'll contact the landlord and get them ro arrange it. Haven't seen any this week other than a large carcass which was revealed after we took the Christmas tree down...nice...
