I wish it was a just a story!!!! Real life I'm afraid, theses bl**dy cardboard boxes are the bain of my life at the moment!!! I have bought the baits for the garage, but waiting for hubby to put them out as I am too afraid to do it - the pics on the box of the roaches freak me out - how sad am I!!! My rellies in the UK have told me I need to get gainful employment to keep my mind on other things!!!!

All part of the fun I suppose!!

Jaysus!!!!!!! Wish I'd thought it through before checking out this post...my skin is absolutely CRAWLING! I am from Queensland, lived in Scotland few years, back in Queensland and planning to return to Scotland next year. When ppl ask me what my obsession is with the UK, I tell them that it is quite literally the fact that there aren't creepy crawlies!!!!!! It took about 6 months after arriving in the UK last time before I could walk into a room, or switch a light on in a room, without automatically checking all corners and walls for cockroaches; same goes for checking shoes for spiders.

I NEVER have to go the bathroom at night - growing up in Qld I trained myself not to need to - becos that's when you're most likely to see the barstools!

When I was a kid we lived on a farm and my bedroom was a verandah sleepout. I got woken up that many times with roaches crawling in my bed and on my face that I became attuned to their slightest movement. I would wake up out of deepest slumber, wondering why. I"d switch on the light and there'd be a roach on the wall, or coming in under the door.

I can fully sympathise with the horror of having an infestation. I lived on the Gold Coast for a while and the rental flat was full of them - the little ones (infestation) and the big, flapping wings ones. It took weeks to get it sprayed and sorted (bloody real estate) and in the meantime I was a living ghoul...could barely sleep at night, bought $$$ of DIY stuff, & one night when a big one flew into my room and got into my wardrobe, I emptied about 4 cans of Mortein into the room, shut the door on it and slept on the floor in the spare room, not before I rolled up a couple of newspapers and stuck them into every crack and crevice and sprayed surface spray throughout the room.

I also had them coming out in the shower.

God I feel sick and will never sleep tonight! I say a prayer every night that God will protect me from all creepy crawlies, cockroaches and flapping things while I sleep. How odd is that??? Don't know what you guys are doing here - must be even worse when you're not used to them!

Forgot to say: I concur with keeping everything clean. Moved into a new rental last year, 8 1/2 months pregnant, unpacked everything and raced off to other house for one last check before settling into new place for much needed sleep. Stepped in door, turned on light....and saw the biggest bloody monster roach climbing over a bowl of crisps on the bench. I nearly puked and very nearly went into labour. Spent the next week sleeping on the floor at my sister's until absolutely convinced no roaches left. Petrified I'd get up to my newborn one night and find them crawling on her!!!!

Do your sorting/garage cleaning in the winter when they're just eggs (and spray then too - before they come out and start breeding). My pest man tells me they really like fridges, so keep an eye on those. Get surface spray - not just the usual spray, and spray your doors and window ledges (that's to stop the flying ones).

I also keep my fan on - in the sad hope that the extra wind might make it harder for them to fly/navigate!!!!

They say if you microwave them they don't die. They will also survive a nuclear holocaust. But they don't like Scotland, thank God! At least the flying ones don't. Yay for the northern winters!!!

Hilarious thread. Love the stories, if only they were. As I type at 8am on this fine saturday morning Huzza and my son are in battle with the latest breakout of ants in our bedroom and dining room. They seem to be using the underneath of the skirting board to avoid dectection! ''Get the Mortein out''.

Another lovely day begins x

Our Cesspit is like a wall of death of cockroaches if you take top off but sure they will just return with in days if sprayed anyway.

What sorts of Ants did you have ours aren't the wire eating type as far as I know just your normal Ant that doesn't like talc so just use talc to keep them out.

My fear of coming over here was spiders (have a terrible fear). Was not prepared for what happened. Hope you have a spare hour...................

We moved into my Dad's rental (NSW), had a few issues with ants, my dad said we were leaving food out and it was obviously attracting them - one night admittedly I left out an apple which my little one had not eaten - the next morning the kitchen was covered - in drawer units, worktop covered, everywhere!! Even when cleaning the surfaces after every mealtime we still had problems. We got spray from the store and did a diy job around the house. The worst problem was that you would go to bed at night and they would be coming out of electrical sockets behind where I slept, I would spot them crawling on our bedroom ceiling whilst just getting into bed, I used to virtually 'sleep' under the quilt, then I would break out in sweats with the heat!!!! They were in the kids rooms, whilst watching tv my kids would find them crawling on them, we would find them in the bathroom and even crawling out of the laundry sink!!!! My Dad acknowledged after some weeks this wasn't quite right and perhaps not our fault regarding leaving stuff out etc.......So he called in the pest control......my saviour!!

In the meantime I had a run in with a cockroach, whilst opening the patio door, something flew (didn't know they could fly) from above missed my head by an inch and landed at my feet, as it began its approach, I ran backwards not wanting to take my eye off it, I had intended to back into the kitchen and grab a can of bug spray but the thing was so fast it had me backed into the lounge against the front door before it ducked under the tv cabinet, i ran back to the kitchen, grabbed a can and hunted it out, it took an eternity to die and I eventually finished it off with the hoover!! My Dad said it had probably come in with the bed I had delivered earlier that day - clearly I disturbed the sleep it must have been having!!

The day came for the pest man to come - 9.30am appt, I waited....and waited....finally at 12.30 I called to be told he was running a bit late - he arrived at 3.30pm - I left him looking around chatting with my husband. When I took him out a drink, he told me not to worry he would be back tomorrow to sort things out and that would be end to my problem! I said we have an ants nest then', he replied 'It's not the ants you need to worry about, it's the cockroaches you have nesting in the roof space, but don't worry they only come out at night so you will be asleep when they are running around tonight'!!!! I FREAKED, my son was sleeping on a blow up mattress at this stage, I had visions of them crawling all over him as he was so low on the floor, visions of them partying when the lights went out - I covered my ears as he laughed at me and said I don't want to know anymore. That night was spent at my Dad's, I got up for a drink at 11.30pm and one scuttled past me, I got the kids up and made my husband take us out of the house.

The house was cleared, the ants had eaten away at the electrical wires behind our bed, it was caught just in time - it did take three attempts to rid the ants as they kept appearing at a later date in different places moving the nest.

I can laugh about it now, but at them time having been in a new country for only a week, living in those conditions for 3 weeks, lack of sleep, feeling unsettled in the house - it really did put a strain on this experience for me. Even when the house was sprayed it took me weeks to establish a sleeping routine, any noise would freak me out. I have found a couple of roaches in the house since, although dead from the chemicals we have had sprayed, the thought of them getting into the house and being live for a while disturbs me for a few days again - I have since been told that palm trees which we have round the property attract them, also the storage boxes we have in the garage from our shipment will be a breeding ground. Over the coming weeks, I intend to slowly empty the boxes and store our stuff in other types storage containers.

So after this epic, my advice to newcomers is to check if the rental has been sprayed - especially if it has been empty. Don't ignore your instinct - I knew we had a problem but let others tell me I was over-reacting this is the way life is here, get used to it!!! I am currently having a house built - I know the pest control guy will be in it before me even if it is a new house!!!!

As they say on crime watch..........don't have nightmares :scared:

Delightful - but would you mind if I continued to believe they're all up North and I'm blissfully safe in Melbourne? Have only seen one cockroach (already dead) in our house. At our rental we had horrible ants but the estate agent suggested we use Beygon around all the windows and doors and we hardly saw any more for the rest of the year.

Please do not disabuse me of my belief that we're safe here!

I'm working on the green policy that everything seems to have something that eats it in Aus so let most of the insect life battle it out between themselves the cane toads and the gekkos, just hope the cockroach germs don't eat us.

Difference between cockroaches in Victoria and up north? Always reminds me of a girl I knew at college who had come up to Brisbane from Victoria. Our college had a heap of dumpy 1970s houses they rented out to students. In one they'd crammed a few extras in so they were using a downstairs part of the garage as a double room. Another friend was in that one and they were always having trouble with creepy crawlies.

On one particularly bad occasion, the Victorian girl was over at the house and she stood up and declared that 'She didn't care about cockroaches, not like all you Queenslanders...hardy har' and she'd sort it.

Well, a few minutes later and she was running back upstairs, face pale as death, screaming hysterically..."THEY FLY!!!!!!!!!"

Hehehe...bigger and better up north, eh? Must've been bloody terrifying - not knowing they flew and then having one come at you. I had one about 6 inches long fly at my neck one night when I was walking around a hotel pool (I was about 10). I leapt about so much I nearly fell in the pool, evening dress and all! CAn still feel it's crunchy, horrible wings and skittery little legs in my hands as I threw it away...
