city world rankings
i dont normaly cut and paste but this might be of some interest to the people of this forum.
PERTH has lost some ground in world rankings for quality of life, but remains the third most favoured Australian city behind Sydney and Melbourne.
In a survey released yesterday, comparing the quality of life in 215 world cities, Zurich was top.
Sydney slipped from equal fourth to equal fifth place.
Melbourne dropped from 12th place last year to 15th, while Perth dipped from 18th to 20th, putting it just behind Wellington but neck and neck with San Francisco.
The survey considered 39 criteria, including political, social, economic and environmental conditions, public safety and the provision of services such as transport, education and health.
On public safety alone, Sydney only managed 36th place, a rung shared by Melbourne and Brussels. Luxembourg was the world's safest city.
On the quality of life ranking, Adelaide and Brisbane were in 31st place, with Paris, Oslo and Yokohama.
New York ranked 44th, behind London in 39th place.
Baghdad did not come last. It scored 213th place, only two down on last year. Trailing it was the Central African Republic city of Bangui. In last place was Congo's Brazzaville.
In personal security Baghdad ranked 203.

The last two investment gurus from we had over from the Melbourne office had bigger busts than brains.

Re: city world rankings
I notice it's only out of 215 cities in the world, and they seem to have forgotten about the cities in Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland and only remembered London(Eng) and Dublin(Ire) again , I never take too much notice of these so-called surveys being a country town girl .
Out of interest - not relating to the city thing above, but all these polls you read about - has anyone here ever taken part in a survey? I have never once been asked . Just curious because like with the "war" thing - polls say this and that 61% say this etc - 50 hate the monarchy etc and so on -
Who on earth do they ask... anyway get my drift do a survey of a hundred people, then do the same survey with another new hundred people - results will change. I take them with a pinch of salt.
cheers

actually the ratings are not based on a survey. Mercer Human Resource Consulting, who are based in 37 countries, use 39 criteria & I quote from the news:
"For its measuring stick, the company considered 39 criteria, including the political, social, economic and environmental conditions in each of the cities, as well as public safety and the provision of services such as transport, education and health".
PB & Pankela - u guys may have lost super funds last year, but join the club! these ratings appear comprehensive & impartial.

Found the "whats-in-it-for-me" best for effect and politeness.

They do them so that they can provide client companies, for a fee of course, with estimates of how much overseas allowance they should give their ex pat staff. Its a contrived calculation based on a broad set of assumptions which is designed for a specific purpose. They are not saying that its 'better' to live in A or 'worse' to live in B. They are merely saying that financially you should think about more compensation for a person relocating to B versus A.
This crowd did a calculation for my firm when I was sent from London to Sydney and according to them Sydney is more expensive than London so I am paid $15,000 per year "housing allowance". Of course I wont argue with someone handing me money, but as an accountant I find the calculations prepared by these HR "specialists" laughable sometimes!
Suggest you take the results with a large pinch of salt.
