We went and applied for citizenship 2 years to the day but it took about 3 1/2 months after that to come through and do the ceremony bit. I have both British and Australian passports. Our local council gave each of the new citizens a gift of a native tree for our gardens - nice touch.

Oh and the brain surgery didn't hurt a bit

What does this 'ceremony' involve? Is it true you've got to sing Advance Australia Fair?!!

YES YOU DO!!!

Plus swearing an oath of allegiance to Queen, although I think there is now a choice about that bit - we did it in 1993 - and a lot of dignitaries welcoming new citizens to Australia etc etc then drinks with the Mayor afterwards.

Oh and children under 16 have to be on ONE parents application only, then when they turn 16 they can apply to have their own official certificate. Our local council gave all the kids a special one to include them in the proceedings as at the time they were 8 and 6 and too young to have the official document.

like the old one about the Brit that goes in for surgery to remove a tumour and when he wakes up his surgeons tell him that they removed half his brain by mistake rather than the tumour and he replies...

"Fair Dinkum mate"
