Well finally the time has come to sort out the christmas tree. We haven't got one yet we always had a real one in the UK, but I don't think one would survive here for long - so we are going to get an artificial one, has anyone got one they like, I am not the keen them as they look too perfect and don't have that lovely christmas tree smell but needs must. We have just had a leaflet through from Target with some very good offers, has anyone bought one from there?

I got mine from myers- they had special offers on, got it half price $150 - its 9ft and it looks great (well I think so anyway).It does take a while to put it up though as every branch has to be arranged. We alays had a real tree in the UK too but I didnt like the idea of aussie insects crawling off the tree in my house at night if you know what I mean.

The first year we were in Perth we bought a real tree just as we did in England.Spent ages decorating and it looked lovely.Three days before Christmas woke up to a drooping tree with the decorations rolling off it.Went to Target and got one at a reduced prce and had it all decorated before the family got up.Have promised the kids to put it up earlier this year as we seem to be the last to put ours up and "its not fair Mum"

I've always turned my nose up at artificial trees, but I bought the most gorgeous, huge tree in Meyer our first Christmas here and although you don't get the smell, not having the mess is a plus! Keep an eye out, we too got ours on a "half price" special.

My father sold xmas trees his whole life in the Uk on the wholesale markets, so I cant being myself to buy an artificial tree over here.

Here in Melbourne we buy from a local xmas tree farms. Go out in the fields, point out the tree and they get the chainsaw and cut it down for you.

Ours have lasted till just into or just before new year before they really need to be thrown out.

A cut tree over here needs to be kept in a stand that keeps it watered though. Very important otherwise it will start dropping badly after a week.

Chopping down a tree just for Christmas is frankly disgraceful and environmental vandalism. Thankfully it is extremely rare here.

I agree. Whether it's a cash crop or not, I don't see the point of it. It must be a NH tradition.

Certainly never did that in Africa where I grew up. Africa is crying out for trees to be planted.
