No concern in the medical field. Someone with VERY poor science had an interesting hypothesis, tried it out on 12 kids - without ethics approval, and decided the equivalent that "having a colour TVs in the home MAY be related to autism". (Afterall, children who get autism live in houses with colour TVs.) Medical doctors are now being taught at med school just how research should be undertaken, and what constitutes robust research. The Wakefield paper is actually hilarious to read once you have about 5 hours education on what "good" research looks like. From an educational point of view, I think that this was the disaster we had to have. From a public health viewpoint, it was VERY unhelpful. |

Re: children's vaxinations
Has anybody got a link for the immunisation schedule in OZ?
When we moved to NZ from the UK they had to have some extra jabs, just wondered if OZ is the same as UK or NZ or has a different requirement? Thanks WithIce x |

I give my year 10 students 30mins and a computer with internet access to try and answer the question 'does the MMR vaccine cause autism' we've been doing this acitivity for many year, prob over 200 students, and never had a single one come back saying they believe it does after looking at the evidence. It always amazes me that teenagers can get their head round this easily but some adults stuggle. |

5 Hours education on good research? I wouldn't have thought it would take anywhere near that long!

We have to understand all sorts of things: research techniques, statistical mthods, ethics, clinical difference compared/meaning of a positive or negative result, Presentation of results. Confounders. I could go on..... LOL :) I quite like it all actually, nerd that I am :) |

Yeah I did kinda figure Docs needed to know a bit more than teenagers ;) though actually a lot of that stuff is now on the sylabus so maybe the next generation will be a bit more critical.
