Default Childbirth downunder

Hi everyone,
We hope someone will be able to help us with the following question.
Is it possible for a woman to request an elective caesarian section in Australia in the medicare system ie in a public hospital?
We have our PR visas and have decided to have our baby (due in July) delivered in Australia to avoid having to make another migration application for the new baby.
My wife had an elective section for our first baby last year and would like the same again! We are aiming to travel at the end of May when she will be around 28 weeks pregnant.
We are heading for the Sunshine Coast.

Just out of interest- why a C section again- I had one first time round and certainly dont want one again!

I think it genuinely depends on the hospital you are with (like UK).

How do you feel moving whilst pregnant? (not that i am asking out of a vested interest honest!)

Love

Hi Grub,
Good question. She's a gynaecologist/obstetrician herself and decided this was the best way to go.
Her former boss did her section last year and she was home on the second day following the op.
It took us four years to finally get our PR visas and we can't take the risk of the same thing happening again if we were to apply for a PR visa here for the new baby. We would love to have the new baby here in the same way.
Moving and travelling with a heavilly pregnant wife and a one year old who is just walking and into everything is going to be a nightmare. Unfortunately we shall just have to get on with it and hope everything works out.

I was interested to read your post and it made me realise that I might be taking things for granted about the birth of my baby in early June.

We are hoping to move to Adelaide in mid March (visa permitting, that's if the blinking thing ever arrives!!!) and hope to have the baby in Oz. I am already down for a C-Section at my local maternity hospital because of a history of severe back problems (spinal fusion) and presumed that once I arrived in Oz the local hospital would just give me a C-section without any questions asked.

Maybe this is something that I should look into more.

Anyway good luck.

Icy,
We went to see our consultant yesterday after having the 12 week scan.
She reassured us that if we were to arrive in Australia armed with a referral letter from her, stating that we are booked here for an elective c/section, then they would be very foolish to ignore it and refuse an operative delivery.
Suggest you do the same and make sure you take a letter with you. Give your doctor advance warning so they can arrange a letter, photocopy notes and include results of routine investigations.
We are still awaiting confirmation from a friend of a friend who is in the business in Australia before we book flights.
Let us know if you find out anything different in the meantime,
All the best, Lorrimer

Lorrimer,
If you have already had a C section with your first pregnancy, it is pretty standard to have one with your second. Take your medical records with you. My sister had a C S with her first child and there was no questions when she had her second. She was booked in months in advance to have it done. So she knew exactly what date and time Maddy was coming into the world.

You may want to check that she can fly that late into the pregnancy. I think it is either after 6 or 7 months they won't let you on the plane.

Good luck.

Thank you for the advise, I will certainly make sure that I get a referral letter from my GP, etc etc to take with us. I was planning on asking my local maternity hospital if I could take my hospital file with me to Oz as well. I wonder whether they will agree.

We had our 20 week appointment yesterday and listened to the baby's heartbeat for the first time - it was excellent - makes it seem more real.

All the best

Hi,
I can't imagine that any OB specialist would refuse a request from a patient who has had a previous C/S for a repeat section. So I really think you have nothing to worry about.

Now, now, you two, no arguing over names. Why not call it something unusual like Bald Butts?
Seriously though, the hospital probably won't allow you to take your notes with you. However if the hospital allows you to carry your own notes, why not photo copy them all.
BTW I've just seen that you are posting from Romford. You don't want to buy a house in Hornchurch do you?
What a small world!! Are you booked into Harold Wood?
All the best,
Lorrimer

Yes, I am booked into Harold Wood, are you? I have got my 22 week scan at the end of January so will speak to them then about taking my file incase we get to go to Oz before the baby is born.

Thanks for the offer to buy your pad in Hornchurch, but I am going to have to turn you down as we are trying to sell our pad in sunny Rush Green at the moment. Should exchange contracts this week and move out in 4 weeks time. Will have to decided nearer the time whether we are moving into short term accommodation or long term (until after the baby is born).

All the best,
Icy
