Hi

I think its http://www.familyassist.gov.au and if we can't claim it in Australia, does anyone know if you can continue to claim it from the UK?

Thanks

Sam

You can't claim your UK family allowance if you are leaving the country permanantly. The family assistance which is similar to the UK family allowance is means tested here, if you earn over a certain ammount you will not be able to claim. hope this helps a bit?

You'll need to hold meet the requirements of being defined as an "Australian resident" under the Social Security Act 1991.

A 457 holder does not fall under this category.

Can't always get this site to work at the moment but look at www.centrelink.gov.au. They administer family allowance, the equivalent of UK child benefit.

I think it's means tested (tapering off for higher earners) so most get something. Maximum for one child is $99 per fortnight. You need to register with Centrelink as soon as you arrive to start getting it.

Not sure if it applies on your visa class but it is available to all permanent residents, migrants, etc. It's not one of those welfare benefits you're not allowed to claim in the first 2 years.

The website has a good Q&A section which should explain it all.
