Chefs & Hairdressers are in Demand!
Latest News:
Chefs and hairdressers will top the list of most sought-after jobs as Australia emerges from the wake of the global financial crisis. It is thought that the highly transient nature of these jobs, with a high turnover and burnout rate, contributes to the skills shortage in these areas and the inability of supply to meet demand.
And..IT, health care, engineering, automotive & metal trades...
problematic industries are construction, marketing, advertising, public relations and finance...

I would also like to know about problematic IT industry - not in programming a sprinkler set, but managing an IT organization kind of way. Re. hairdressers - I have had a pleasure walking down Gold Coast neighbourhoods and in and around Sydney a few times over - I have seen a few (meaning somewhere between three and a sh^tload) barber shops that were either (i) closed in the middle of the weekday or (ii) empty with two or three professional haircutters standing around and pointing at things.

Problematic means not great demand.... remember these reflect skill shortages over all Australia, not just the capital cities where you can get a haircut cheaper than a country town!
Also reflects that Australia has a lot do in regional development, but state capitals are the biggest barrier.....higher profiles internationally, competing for resources etc.
Extract below:
Top Ten Occupations with the highest levels of skill shortages according to the Clarius Index chefs, hairdressers, health professionals, metals tradespeople, food tradespersons, computing professionals, automotive tradespersons, building & engineering professionals/associates and science professionals.

Unfortunately Australia is like other countries where loud opinions in the media (i.e. big fish in small pond), and much of it racially motivated, nor informed (except by bigots and knee jerk reactionaries), puts pressure on government to reduce immigration (so that Labor govts in Victoria and NSW have chance of being reelected think in 2010..). However, the reality is different in different regions (outside big cities), different occupations....
Hairdressers are relevant, near city centre train stations of Sydney and Melbourne have seen mens' haircuts from $10. In bush e.g Yarrawonga, population of ~5,000 and increasing (with tourists 15K in summer), has only two barbers charging $15+, they are aged in their 50s and 60s.....this is where obvious skill shortages are occurring but governments do not seem able to match up let alone manage demand with supply...
