When i was over there about 18 months ago telstra were doing a really cheap subscription service. I think we were paying about $10 a month to subscribe, and the calls were alot cheaper than the standard international service.

Forget Telstra. Buy a 'Go Talk' card from the Post Office. Calls to the UK are about 4c per minute (sometimes I've only been charged just one dollar for an hour's phone call). And they are real full circuit-switched connections - none of this low bandwidth stuff.

That's what I call incredible value. Compare that to an Australian Vodafone PAYG mobile local call. 4c would get you 4 seconds exactly - and they claim that is the lowest PAYG rate in Australia.

Question

Hi Nick,

D'ya know if we get the "Go Talk" cards in Perth? Haven't heard of them here, but sound brilliant.

Yes. Get them from an Australia Post office. Here's a link for more details.

http://www.cardcall.com.au/GTbegin.htm

It's 3.9c per minute to the UK.

There is also one called Ozcall that claims to be 1.9c per minute but I haven't tried that.
