Default charcoal BBQ's

Hi All,
As you're all aware, the Brits way of doing a BBQ is usually a burnt offering on a charcoal fired BBQ whereas, Aussies love their gas fired BBQ's.
Personally, I love the taste of charcoaled BBQ's , preferably not burnt and not poisonous though, after a few glasses of wine I really don't give a s***.
On all my travels to OZ I've never seen a charcoaled fired BBQ so, should I bring my one over and will I be able to buy some charcoal for it?
Regards Derren

We bought a charcoal weber over here from big w, I think most barbeque places sell some charcoal ones as well as gas ones, not had any problem getting charcoal or firelighters for it either, the supermarkets all sell them.

Thanks for that desparatehousewife,
so lets fire this debate up, pun intended, what's better, gas or charcoal?

VOTE GAS

Instant..ish

Bigger/cheaper to run (try filling an aussie sized barbie with charcoal... Cost a bleeding fortune)

Easier to switch off/on

have those neat little chopping boards and wok rings built in...

Have cupboards underneath for keeping yer rolls away from the flies..

Easier to clean

No unecessary heat when you've finished cooking

Gas. No question. Bought a Webber Q and it gives a BBQ flavour because of the way it is used. Takes 10 seconds to clean, no dirt no fuss and i can control the temperature with the turn of the knob. Heck, if i want i can buy the little packs of wood chips to put in to give it a woodsmoke flavour

We brought our charcoal BBQ with us, but have bought a Weber gas BBQ since and it wins hands down. Not noticed any difference in food and it is much cleaner.

You can buy a Weber gas BBQ with a smoker, you put hickory wood chips in the smoker.

A gas Barbie is cheating. I have a charcoal one from Bunnings. Although, annoyingly, not everywhere lets a charcoal one be used due to fire bans.

This one is quite cut and dry, for the vast majority of people.

Gas is better for daily BBQ use for general quick cooking, which can be quite common to avoid indoor cooking in the hot months.

Charcoal gives a better taste, but takes longer, and not something I would fancy doing every other day.

Some of the gas BBQ ones do have charcoal taste features, but mine is just gas for convenience.

I use a charcoal Webber. I do have a gas one but the last time I used it was years ago.

My South African pal gave it to me after I made him a biltong drying box. So I don't know how much it was. I can't imagine it would be that expensive.

It's great for doing roasts in too, with the lid on.

How big was the biltong drier? Does it keep the flies off?

Back on topic.

I bought a gas one here. Prefer charcoal but for now the convenience and cost of gas is better.

Could boil water in a few mins when the leccie was off during the flood.

Precisely what it is, but a nice decent sized one, and not situated in a hot kitchen

The bastards! How can they stop people using charcoal BBQs in some areas because of a few pesky bushfires? This country needs a human rights act!

Cheers

Steve
