don't know where you would get the best rates, and this can depend on the amount you are changing, try a search.

Surely your own bank would be best as they dont charge comission I know barclays and natwest dont for sure(providing you are customer)and i think I saw an ad saying postoffice dont charge either.
Just a thought

I would buy your oz $ soon because this time of year the oz $ starts to increase its value against sterling, 2 days ago $ would buy less than 39.5p, now its over 42p

Id settle for the low, I have to buy sterling next month when I leave oz.

the rates I quoted were from the news here in oz. I didnt check bank rates, but of course the rates differ quite a bit from buying and selling.

according to onada 1 $aus=42323 pence today or $2.36276 to the pound sterling, an amount I quite like !!

Perhaps one day members of this forum could make exchange deals between themselves and save a bit of commission/charges

On 12/12/02 Oanda were quoting 2.8142, and I got 2.795 from my bank HSBC, but other Bank quotes on that day were about 2.65.

Definitely worth asking for quotes from the likes of Halewood Intl (we used them). Very competitive rates and you can forward book the currency too for no obvious fee (I guess it's in the rate though).

If you just want a few hundred pounds worth, then put the money in a current account in the UK and bring your bank card.

We withdraw cash from our UK Nationwide current account, and have paid about £212-£214 for $500 over the past couple of months. In fact it works out cheaper than bank transfers etc. - we wired £8,000 (about $19,000) and got a better rate on the $500 we took out the ATM to tide us over!

It takes a bit of nerve turning up with no cash, but there are plenty of ATMs, and your taxi driver at the airport will be delighted to stop at an ATM when her realises that's where his fare is coming from!

i think the post office do free transactions and have pretty good rates, i would change it sooner rather than later because the dollar is gaining all the time.

Question Sterling Vs Dollar?

I noticed from some of your posts that there are seasonal fluctuations in the exchange rates, is this only for the last year or does it tend to have highs and lows at certain times of the year.
The reason I ask is that I hope to change all of our money in May, June 2004, but if this was a bad time to exchange I would try to hold off and change only what we need until we can get a better rate.
I'm sure if you're anything like me the daily exchange rate from sterling to dollar is not doing anything for the old moral.
Recently I found a web site <www.xe.com> if you register with them they will send you daily exchange rates via email and they also offer an excange rate service which I think may be very good, need to check it out though?
Does anyone reckon we going to see the pound worth $2.80 again ???
