Central Heating wanted - Perth
#1
Is it just me or is it b**dy cold !!!!
Now I appreciate that it gets very hot in the summer and air con is needed BUT it also gets cold in winter. I'm doing jeans, socks, 2 jumpers and log burner at night now. Its only the start of winter too - another 8 weeks to go of cold, wet, windy weather. Why do the Aussies not do Central Heating, you know the usual - combi boiler for the water, radiators in rooms that come on in the morning before you get out of bed, timers, thermostats !!!!!
I need radiators. Apart from anything else I can't dry towels on the line as it has rained for the past 4 days.
Any central heating engineers coming over ???? Set up in business - you'll do fine.
Sorry, whinge over, going to get a hot water bottle !

Are you animal or vegetable? Neither heating nor cooling is needed for survival although you may find it desirable if your metabolic or sweating processes are defective.

Don't you have reverse cycle aircon over there ? So you can use the heating part in winter ?

Wait till later on in Winter when we start getting clearer days and nights without the rain (and cloud cover which keeps the temps up) we'll get a fair few nights when it drops down to only a few degrees above zero, then its bloody freezing
:scared: And its made even worse if you have to walk down St Georges Terrace to work at 8am, its like a wind tunnel.
And I dont know where you got 8 weeks left from, I can remember doing the city to surf run last August (29th) and waiting on the start line in shorts and t-shirt it was 3C. :scared:
Its not till well into September that the day time temps are regularily back above about 22C, and nights into October are still only about the same as at present with many down around 5C.
I remember last year we had some freaky weather in Mid November where one morning it got down to 5C and about 3 days later it got up to about 36C in the day.
Still we do get the best summer in OZ, pretty much guaranteed sunshine and around 30C for 6 Months with no humidity, so we shouldnt grumble.
Its the perfect excuse to enjoy some of the great Margaret River Reds, you'll soon forget the cold

Wait till July, if you think its cold now. As mentioned previously reverse aircon is the answer. I am still in shorts (mostly)

It's getting pretty cold, we curl up on the sofa with fleece blankets in the evening but it's not as cold as growing up in the 70s without central heating, the frost would make mad patterns on the windows. I heat the bedroom with an oil heated radiator as the damp sets my asthma off, has been much better. I would make sure your loft is insulated and maybe line your outside walls, get thick curtains or those roller shutters. I think you can ship central heating over from Vic and there must be enough Pommie plumbers about to fit it, but I imagine it would be pretty expensive to do.
My Aussie mate has taken to wearing a huge overcoat and a beanie everywhere, I think she keeps the beanie on all the time lol.
Brrrr.... its chilly innit... might make a pot of soup and keep it bubbling on the stove tonight

Aussies cant build houses properly. Architects and builders need to see the standards of British houses where the UK urinates over them. Open plan? Why the need?

Pretty much summed up the Perth climate for the whole year.

You're right about the current temperature. This'll be our 3rd winter in Perth, & I agree that it's not even started getting cold at night yet.
Last year there was one night that it got to -1ºC.
I thought I'd scraped my last windscreen till that morning!
Still a lot better than -29ºC in Scotland!!

THat's why we're not using our heaters yet, cause we know it will get colder.
I heard it's going to be 3 degrees Monday night... Ah, looked it up:
MEDIUM RANGE FORECAST FOR PERTH FOR:
Sunday : Showers, cold. Min: 5 Max: 14
Monday : Few showers. Min: 4 Max: 16
Tuesday : Early shower risk then fine. Min: 3 Max: 18
brrrrr!!!
Argh! We're having a day out with Pascal's work Sunday, to the Swan Valley. Well, it'll from the car to the winery to the car to the Chocolate factory then. No sitting outside!!

Perth certainly has extremes 3 degrees in winter and 44 in summer nice
Do they do much reverse cycle airconditioning there?, we have just installed it in a massive 3 level house for a client and it only cost $12,000, a normal house would be way less, it does both heating or airconditioning fantastic stuff.

when you check out the climates before you come you tend not to worry about the night time temps to much, you generally see a winters day in the high teens and rarely see a day under 15C so you think thats not bad be happy with that in the UK at the start and end of summer
But then as soon as it gets dark in winter when there's no cloud the temperature plummets and your freezing your wotsits off!
I agree it is better than -29, I remember skiing trips as a kid and getting in the cable car in the resort and it being partly sunny, then at the top of the mountain getting out and it being a howling blizzard and being able to see about 2ft in front of you. You had to concentrate so hard where you were going your eyes would practically freeze open and the various facial fluids leaking from you (that you had no control over!) would freeze into ice-icles, rolling up in ball, crying whilst waiting to die often seemed an attractive alternative
