You *are* being serious?

If you want to see some really delusional nonsense, visit any of the sites detailing what is going on making John Paul a saint. Monty Python couldn't make it up.

I was "being serious". But I see your point about these Catholics. Sainthood? Sounds more like devil worship to me.

These articles make my blood boil!
I am choosing to send my kids (first-born next year) to a state school because I believe in the separation of Church and State. I do not believe in any God and therefore do not wish to impose any set of beliefs on my children. I am happy for them to get religious education from a cultural and historical perspective, in which case it should be taught by a trained teacher who is able to convey the differences and similarities in many religions (including christian and non-christian ones). I will let my kids decide what they want to believe in and I will support them in their choice, but I will not let them be endoctrinated by others.

I totally respect people's beliefs and if they choose to bring their kids up in a certain faith, good for them. That is why there are catholic and other religious schools. If you want your kids to be taught your religion, and also for them to go to state school, then send them to Sunday school or religious education classes outside of the state school!

I will definitely ask the school we have chosen whether they have any religious education and what form it takes. And I will definitely tick the 'no religion' box in the census. Pretty sure I did that in 2006 too.

Teacher fury over God comic
http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/te...505-1ea5a.html

The comic strip, You're Asking for It, features a brutish teacher who is indifferent to the suffering of a student whose head was flushed down a toilet by school bullies. The teacher only reluctantly punishes the bully after God intervenes. The comic strip, by Rene Pfitzner, says ''Luke 18: Jesus told them all a story to show they should keep praying to God.''

Yup. Often some of the most unpleasant people are also devoutly religious. Never really understood how that works out.

I used to lodge in a granny flat that was attached to an old folks home. The woman who owned it was a devout catholic, and was always in my face about not going to to church, and how much money she gave to the church, and could I not have loose women around to the flat etc, yet she was quite happy to let the old folks live in abject misery - she bought them the cheapest of food from Aldi, and they had the same thing to eat every day - usually beans on toast.

It was pretty sickening.

I've often wondered about that, but it kind of makes sense, unpleasant people will be most in need of the validation a church can provide.

I often wonder just how many actually *believe* in a god, as opposed to those who profess to?

We talk about Father Christmas as if he exists but we know he doesn't - I'm sure many who go to church have the same attitude. It's the going to church as a social activity and validation that "I'm good" that matters.
