Hi we have just got our cat form the UK and now dont know if it is safe for her to go outside in the daytime or does she need to become an indoor cat? it seems cruel to keep her indoors paticularly as she has been outdoors in the UK however I realise the dangers in Cairns but wasnt sure if it is better in the daytime or no different. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi, sure a cat person from Cairns will come along to help soon. My advice would be to find a vet to register with and go along for a check up and any vaccinations etc that your cat will need, ie heartworm and ask your local vet they will know what is about in the area that you live as well as any council restrictions etc.

Our cat goes outside in the day, when he's not sleeping, but we tend to keep him in overnight from about 9.00 ish or whenever he deigns to strut home We mainly kept him in because he was getting in fights with local cats rather than because of other wildlife. He decimated our gecko families but seems to have grown out of that habit. Oh and our cat is australian born, so he wasn't getting into fights because of his accent

Do you live near the beach or out near to the national park,forest areas? Just trying to work out what to do wherever we end up living once we find a home. Currently in apartment trying to find an unfurnished place.

No, we live in town, I married a local so just lived where he lived .... no choice for me - wahhhhhh!

I was interested to read the Cairns Council link as it varies from the flyer they delivered to everyone in our road just a few months ago.

They had received complaints from someone and warned that any cat found outside a property would be considered a stray and taken to the pound.

It reminded everyone that the local law was that no cat was allowed off the owners premises at any time unless on a leash!

Oooh dear, with that in mind, I'll have a word with young Nitro and tell him to stay within the premises. I'm sure he is a law-abiding cat!

Someone has obviously woken up to the fact in Council and the policy has been changed.

I used to work at Uluru ( Ayers Rock ) where we had the occasional cat problem, this was easily resolved by baiting a possum trap with a piece of meat. Once pussy was in the trap, the trap and pussy were placed in a 45 gallon barrel of water.

After half an hour, we used to remove the trap and check on the condition of ‘pussy’, if the little kitty was in good shape, we were honour bound to release it otherwise it just went into the nearest garbage bin.

I have to say that we didn’t release too many pussys but we did have a thriving Gecko population

This simple solution to the constant attack on our native wildlife by introduced cats and their inconsiderate 'owners' worked so well that I now use it at home.

If any of the neighbour’s cats choose to enter my garden shed.............”time for pussy’s swimming lesson".

Perhaps we should try that on humans who invariably are responsible for the majority of introduced species.

Taking pleasure out of cruelty to animals is not something a normal person should feel proud of, laugh or be bragging about. Your lack oF empathy is a sign of a seriously disturbed personality.
