Cathay Pacific Flights
 

Hi,
Can some one shed any light on this query. I spoke to Cathay Pacific today and got quoted for a one way to from Manchester to Cairns.

When I asked about extra baggage allowance, I was advised that this is for passengers with an "un-used indefinite stay visa"?
Would this then not be granted to me as I have a 457 ( Temporary long term business Visa)

Any advice appreciated, as I have these flights on hold until Monday! :rofl:

Hi Dom
I think that sounds about right. most airlines only allow the extra allowance if you are emigrating for good.
Im sure some one else will come along and let you know too.

Sorry Dominic,

But a 457 Temporary Visa is just that a Temporary Visa. To get the extra baggage allowance you must have a permanent residency visa.

Sorry to jump on your thread, but we are flying Cathay pacific in 3 weeks and I was unaware they gave extra baggage allowance. Did you phone them directly or was it through a travel agent? Also how much extra did they say you could have?

Just wanted to be sure, incase someone else had managed to 'blag' the extra bagagge allowance on a 457.

Caz, I called them and booked directly if you do this they have special fares for people migrating on an indefinate stay visa.

Wonder how much it would cost to take an extra bag of 20kg? Does anyone know??

With Singapore Airlines, we managed to blag 80kg between the two of us out of Manchester. Just got an easy going check-in guy. The woman on the desk next to him was even weighing ladies little handbags.

Just the luck of the draw I guess.

457 - so we did not qualify for the extra...guy did not check visa type, I just talked to him nicely.

Would have cost us a lot of money if we had got the woman next to him!

For info, I haven't seen Cathay give anyone extra baggage for the last coupe of years. Its generally only Emirates and Singapore nowadays. The only way others will do it usually is with a special "migrant fare" which often works out to be more expensive than paying excess baggage charges .

Anyone had to pay for extra 20kg case?

Any rough ideas how much if you had to pay for it?

Don't know how much except it's a lot. There will be an Excess Baggage counter at the airport. Send it with them for a lot less money than paying excess baggage with the airline.

We flew with them 6 months ago and just took our 20kg. We had 24 hours in Hong Kong and were told we would be fine to do a bit of shopping andgo over our weight as they were used to this being in Hong Kong.
We did look at the excess baggage prices then (wish we had before) and we would have taken more and risked paying it, it wasn't THAT much. Certainly for us as we didn't send any other stuff over it would have been cheaper and more convenient than posting stuff.

Are you reffering to the airlines excess baggae prices, or the prices at the airports excess baggage counter?

The airlines excess baggage. We were only looking at taking an extra 10kg or so, so for us it would have been worth it, especially as in Hong Kong they said they would have given itto us for free. If you had loads more I'm sure it would start getting worse value.

Just to let you know that Cathay have pretty bad charges for excess baggage £35/kg. I was over by around 8 kg in the end spread over 3 bags but we were all crying so much and me being on my own with 2 kids i dont think they dare charge me - i repacked my bags a million times. BA let you put an extra suitcase through for £60 up to 30kg. Others on my flight got charged the extra - i think i was lucky. I also had 4 hand luggage bags between 3 of us plus a handbag. it was a nightmare to lug about as the kids couldnt carry much and there were no trolleys once we left manchester until we got to sydney! Another nightmare and much regretted.
