Default Cash in Flight - Kids included

Hi,

I know that while coming to Australia, the maximum cash you can carry is AUD 10,000/-

Just needed to confirm that this rule is applied for individual passenger or adults only.

My wife is coming with my 3 kids (10yrs old + 5 yrs old + 3 month old). So she has booked 1 adult, 2 child and 1 infant tickets. Based on this how much cash my wife can bring in? Is it AUD10K or AUD30K or AUD40K?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,
Komail

Don't know the answer but why on earth would you want to be travelling with $40k cash on you in person?

That would be a very silly thing to do. It would be a far better idea to use someone like money corp to transfer the cash

Don't do it! Its really not safe to carry that amount of cash, and in these days of credit cards, bank transfers etc, why on earth would you.

Official answer however is

Reporting physical currency FAQs | Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC)

Can children carry physical currency?
There is no age limit. However, reporting physical currency cannot be avoided by having a child carry it for an adult.

She can carry as much as she likes. There is no limit of $10k per person, that is the level at which it becomes a reporting requirement. Is there some reason you don't want to report it?

But as others have said, it is a very stupid thing to do. Most people carry no more than a few hundred dollars on their person at any time.

I would say your wife will have enough to be doing managing three children and hand luggage without worrying about carrying 40k.

Even $5000 would raise suspicion that it was a tax avoidance or the proceeds of crime.

Especially if it's packed in little Jimmy's Batman backpack.

Why? When the boy and I go to Canada we'll have about $5000 CDN cash on us. How is it proceeds of crime or tax avoidance to carry cash? So long as it's reported there's no reason (other than it's not safe to carry $40k cash) why suspicion would be raised.

I agree. It's not that much and Australia legally allows you $10k with no questions asked

Probably worth the OP considering the countries/airports through which the family would transit, for safety reasons. Aus to Canada, for instance, could be safer than some others in less stable parts of the world - and I suspect this family may be coming from somewhere like that.

Oh I agree. However I was refuting the statement that carrying $5k cash would be suspicious.
