Cars - do Auto or Manual retain value better
That's it, really. Thinking of ordering a manual but dealer has "special deal" on Auto. Which retain value best?

Given the option, I don't think I'd buy a manual ever again. If the dealers giving money off the auto option, doesn't it mean that the depreciation will be less?

nobody here really drives manual cars, so they're likely to be worth less in the long run, unless it's a speciality racing vehicle

We all drive Autos in our family, who wants to change gear every five minutes, lights in Melbourne are dire. We hired an auto in the UK this time, we usually hire a manual but auto was much better.
You see we keep our cars because we are very mean well oh is and have them until they start to cost us money. At present we have cars of 8, 9, and 13 in the carport. The automatic gear boxes have never given any trouble at all. No clutch changes for us. Once they start to cost money we get a new one.

Motorbikes HAVE to be manual though for many reasons.

Edit, it wasn't RACQ, it was here

There is just one catch to the VW Blue Motion (and other super frugal diesel engines from Europe and Japan): it is only available with a manual transmission. Such a restriction will likely cross it off the consideration list for many Australian new-car buyers -- more than 80 per cent of new cars sold Down Under are equipped with automatic transmissions.
"We know this transmission is an issue for some customers but we still want to the get the Golf Blue Motion as soon as we can," says Anke Koeckler, the boss of Volkswagen in Australia.
"A lot of our customers are very passionate enthusiasts and they like a manual transmission. But we also acknowledge that there are some customers that would like an automatic. With our headquarters in Germany we are working on hopefully finding a solution for this."
In Europe, at least 90 per cent of small cars are equipped with manual transmissions, so automatic variants are not a priority. Australia's most economical car, the Ford Fiesta Econetic diesel, a car developed by Ford of Europe, is also a manual only proposition.

We specifically wanted a second-hand manual and they were rarer than the autos for the model we wanted so I guess it depends on supply and demand ...
I still prefer the feeling of being 'in control' to a slushmatic waftalong drive but I can see the appeal on the average commute.

Agree that there seems to be lots more Auto's here, average car size is way bigger too.

So no clear answer then!
Thinking of the Hyundai i30CW diesel. The fuel consumption on the manual is staggeringly low, which is the main reason for buying it. Husband refers manual, I'm not fussed. I keep thinking that it'll be better for our son to learn in, but he's only 3 so I doubt the car will last that long

And I'm with you about the kids learning on a manual. They're only 4 and 2 though, so probably won't learn on this new car

With a DSG box? Better fuel consumption, better performance and just like having an Auto AND a manual at the same time.
