Carpentry jobs in Brisbane?

Hi all, i'm looking to make the big move fairly soon but am a bit worried bout the lack of jobs i've searched in the Brisbane and surrounding areas.:(

Is there anyone who has any idea what the situation in the construction is like out there?

Or does anyone know of any good ways of nailing a job from the UK?...excuse the pun.

Any info would be great.

Cheers

Hi, we have been on the sunshine coast for 5months, have been searching for jobs here down to brisbane and very little has come up it that time - OH is a plumber though, don't know about carpenters. I do know however that work is slowing down here, a friend of ours has been here for 2yr, he's a builder, never had a problem until b4 christmas when he was laid off. Also a sparky whos work is slowing down.
The jobs that we have applied for we haven't even had a lookin, i'm afraid that with some jobs they won't be interested as soon as they hear that you are English...well, that's what it seems, i know others that have come across the same.

This doesn't sound good at all!

Work is really bad in the UK at the mo and was hoping for something when i got to Brissy.

Any reason why you think being English matters?

I had a funny feeling this might have been the case.:(

It seems that most employers want local experience, which is really hard because you need to get in with someone to get that and noone will give you a chance.
At the mo OH is working for a guy who we got his no. from the guy that sold us our car, it is not what you know...... so get out and meet as many people as possible. He only has 1 -3 days a wk and had to offer himself as cheap labour basically just to get in, so he working for half of what he should be earning, but the long term plan is that once he has that experience and a Oz ref he may be luckier in the job market. It is either do this or have no work at all, it is really tough:confused::blink:

That is the plus side i guess.:cool: The only thing i'm worried about is running out of dough and having to go home.:( I wouldn't mind labouring just to get my foot in the door but can't really afford to not work for 4 months, did that last time on my working holiday visa and it cost me a fortune:lol: Where abouts in Brisbane are you situated?

Hi There

My OH a chippy and works on the sunny coast, not had a real problem with work although did go quiet and all others laid off apart from OH and an ozzie. If your good at what you do you'll keep a job and get more offers than you can poke a stick at. Sometimes it also pays to show them what you can do.

Try ORB 07 54500377 working a large site in NOOSA about 2yrs work doing framing to fixout, paying $35 plus an hour dependant on experience and licensing, however very particular on what they want to see work wise and take no prisoners (your crap your gone). All nationalities on site Aussie, Kiwi, Brit, Scot and even poles.

Good Luck and let us know how you get on

Cheers

Re: Carpentry jobs in Brisbane?

things have slowed a little but its still happening
you need your license and insurances more than ever now

I have 2 good jobs starting in late feb march`ish one is a tower block of 50 flats 2nd fix and finals all price work south side.
the other is out at the amberly air base near ipswich , 500 doors to hang all price work too

the prices are lower than we would like because of the downturn but still possible to make good money if your quick and neat

if you pm me details I can offer you something when they start
you can work under my license and insurance

Hi,

My OH is a carpenter, we will be submitting vetassess application next week, I'm interested in finding out as much as possible re the 'licencing'. Do carpenters require this in Queensland?...i cant find any info on this, i'd be grateful if someone could let me know or point me in the right direction.

Thank you,

Re: Carpentry jobs in Brisbane?

I am not sure about licensing - full time employees can work under their employers license but people like licenses to prove your trade. Otherwise they pay you like a labourer.

The license pages are here
http://www.bsa.qld.gov.au/Home/BuildersContractors/

We just got ours for signs after 2 years of doing paperwork but thats because there wasnt an equivalent so Andrew had to go under a couple of classes.

Can anyone give details of usual rates for carpenters on the coast:
So for someone with 1 year experience, 5yr and 10 yrs and whether that is before super. Also how much do offsiders earn?

Not at this time of year but we often take people casual now and again and I never know what to pay. I am sure I just pay random amounts

Great information everyone.

OH is a carpenter and we will be out on the Gold Coast in november. (looking at Pacific Pines area)

how is the best way to apply, going round sites, agency or just emailing your CV.

OH will have the Aus Level III cert. do you think this will help. he is a little worried about the state of the job market too.

thanks all for the information

Re: Carpentry jobs in Brisbane?

OH a chippy, came in April, the day he looked for work (driving round to different construction sites), was offered a job after the 3rd site, been with them since! They have laid people off, but only because a part of the job had finished, and will need again when the next builds commence. They let the others( worked with them for sometime) go instead of OH, as they prefered his work to theres, and thought he was a harder worker. All the others got a job to start the next working day, easy.

For the first 2 weeks he started, they had him doing the same work as apprentices and had him doing all the shit jobs. But once he had come through the "test", he was doing all the best jobs!! The boss has just asked him to price a huge job (school) and will be running it, means alot more $! He loves the work too, he says the actual work he produces is just fantastic here, so moden and different to UK, met some great lads and has a laugh.

i dont know if we have just dropped lucky, but we think there are plenty of good chippy work, with fair pay, depending on what sort of work you want and where. If hubby was laid off, we wouldnt be worried at all, In and around Noosa, there are construction work a plenty, and joinery w.shops, shopfitting, all sorts.

Hubby has never "applied" for a job in the construction industry, so he refused to do it when we got here, he said to get a good chippy job you just go on site and ask, and thats what he did!! Before getting this job, he did ring up a few cabinet making jobs, which were only $24 ph, every week different cabinet maikers/joinery jobs are in the local papers, so ther eare always those too to begin with.

When we first arrived hubby would say all the time, theres a job, theres one, there are jobs everywhere, and so far nothing has changed.
I honestly wouldnt worry about work, Oz is in need of all chippy aspects, and will be for a very long time!!

HOpe this helps

Re: Carpentry jobs in Brisbane?

i,ve been here since october and got work in the local paper for a cabinet making company fitting out there cabinets in cbd.worked for them up till xmas but the money was poor $22 p/h. picked up the yellow pages last thursday and rang round a few companies and landed a job for a portable building company.brilliant job.$35p/h easy work 10 minutes from my home all built in large open sheds so out the sun.the company just got a contract with qld schools for new buildings so they,ve quaranteed me 3 years minimum work.if you look you will find the work but it,s not easy to find good paying work at the moment as it,s like the uk[hard to get a start but once your in you,ll be fine]good luck
