Some do, my partner starts at 6.30 and finishes at 5.30 with no o'/t - it's quite the norm

Yeah, my husband does about the same here although to be fair 2 hours of that are spent travelling. It all depends what site he's on and who he's working for at time to be honest. He used to work away before we had our son, he used to get loads of money for working away but he decided not to do it any more as all work and no play and all that :)

My partner used to work offshore, but there's not the same incentive here for doing the mines as there was offshore at home - theres nothing to do in your won time and it's more dangerous. It's a very difficult decision to make - i know he could never do it here. At least where he works he is very appreciated and he has a lot more skills than most of them do (due to ASCO Codes, etc) - his boss always comes to him first for advice

So he might not be richer but he's happier :)

Exactly - we really are a lot happier - he works with a nice bunch of guys and it's all very relaxed and easy going. You notice that with the lifestyle here

Hi,

Great info. Thanks all for the input. My hubbie has been self employed for 25 years so he is looking for a 9 to 5, paid holidays, sick days etc when we get to Oz. I'm looking forward to that too!!! In our case he will take the pay cut being in employment rather than working for himself as it's been hard slog all the years. He's looking forward to it, no searching for work, no accountants, no work calls at home etc.

Is 20 dollars an hour enough though to survive on in Oz. Would it be considered a low rate?? We are hoping to take out a small mortgage.

$20'ph is more than ebough to survive. Although the house prices are going up, everything else is so cheap. We easily survive on a wage per week and save the other.

Sit's def the most important thing -we're much happier here than we would've been back in Scotland - we're dreading going back in 5 weeks.

Are you going back to get your visa?

Good to know. We now want an easy lifestyle and as long as we can survive on the money earned, we will be happy. Don't have any ideals of being millionaires now at this age. Thanks clippies for your old thread you posted, great info.

Thanks - we'll need it. Everything seems to have been against us so far. Our 4 months should be up the day after we leave so hopefully we'll hear something positive then. Good luck with your future too - i'm sure it'll all work out
