we are currently on southbank but would recommend Europcar. great service, good reliable car. Word of advice, we looked online and it worked out far more expensive at all sites than going into the shop and talking to them. WE got small car Hyundai Getz 1.6 petrol $750 for 9 days including $110 for a one way journey ANd that included being insured to the max... wanted to know that the trams in Melbourne were not going to cause us financial probs if we got hit by one cos we are having trouble with the hook turns!

Europcar on Clarendon Street - just off City Road.

We have used Thrifty and they were very reasonable and cars in good condition.

I would second Europcar, great service and not too expensive. Used them three times and had no problems, and got upgraded from a Focus to a Falcon once at no extra cost, cos they ran out of Focus's. All the cars tend to be autos now too.

I second Thrifty. Before our first Holiday in Oz in 2001 I spent hours researching the rental companies and found Thrifty the cheapest for what I wanated. (Obviously if you want the cheapest possible hire car go to Rent-A-Bomb). As they have a huge range of new cars, on our second holiday in 2005, we hired a convertible for a few days to go down the Great Ocean Road. On our move in March 2006 we hired a car from them for two weeks to give us a chance to buy a car - I hired a Mitsubishi Lancer and got upgraded to a Magna!

One piece of advice though, don't get the car from the airport in Melbourne, it costs extra. When getting a quote on the internet, do one quote from the airport, and one from the "downtown/city" offie and see the difference.
