We are also going to Brisbane in July and have booked through carbookers.co.uk and got a good deal. They were far cheaper than booking direct with Aviz for an eight seater Toyota.

Car hire in Aus is much cheaper than the UK. You should get a standard car for around $50 and an 8 seater for around $80-90/day.

Be carefull we had a bad experiance with a firm near bayside, not safe cars.
And not late models as web site says.

DONT USE REDBACK!!!!
we used them and they stung us when the sunroof smashed (through no fault of ours)
read the small print before you sign
my advice is take your own extra travel insurance that will cover you for all excess waivers inclusive of overhead und under body damage as the car hire companies (apparently) their excess cover doesnt cover this
also when your shattered after the flight and you hire a car from the airport check what your signing we were told that because your tired is no excuse for not reading the small print
(phew glad thats off the chest)
seriously be careful

We used Abel when we went on recce and they were great and cheap too, however this time we got a good deal with Hertz on a large family car. We have booked our own excess insurance.
