How much are u peeps in Aus paying for car insurance, and what type, on what kind of motor?

Ive tried loads of quotes over the web and get all kinds of wild figures. The wife can't remember how much she used to pay either.

She did mention that part of the road tax includes very basic 3rd party insurance, but could'nt remember what it covered. Is it body and property only or what?

I have had a few quotes for Insurance on the Web.
Typical quotes for a 4 year old Ford Falcon 2ltr and similar were around $350-$400 per year (that was with 5 years no claims)
A bit cheaper than the Uk.

I believe the registration Tax covers 3rd party only which means:
It only covers the person, vehicle or property that you damage.
Not a good option unless you only have an old banger.

compulsory 3rd party insurance included in the registration is, I have been told for personal injury only and does not cover property damage

A usefull tip somebody passed to us is take your no claims proof with you,if one of you has no, no claims bonus but has been driving the vehicle you will both get the no claims in oz. jockney

It's easier to get decent quotes if you ring up. I've insured my cars each time in Oz with AAMI as they always seemed cheapest -their website has the phone number.

Compulsory third party only covers damage to others not fire and theft for your car like here.

Definitely take proof of your no-claims bonus - ask your insurance company for written proof of this and they will post you a note. Or take your last renewal notice if recent enough.

Beware importing a car unless you really must still have that particular make/model in Oz. In some states (Victoria for sure) you have to have special import plates put on which means most insurers won't touch you. So more expensive insurance via specialists plus you can only insure for the import value (what you paid for it in UK if newish) not what it would cost to replace in Oz. All those import costs and you get a car with expensive insurance that you can't afford to replace with the payout if it gets nicked!

I paid $500 for fully comp on a Toyota Vienta. That's with two mature adult drivers, 'safe' occupations, garaged, no convictions, and full NCB. That's about £200 which I reckon is slightly more than I'd pay in the UK considering that this is just a comprehensive element top up because I've already paid the basic insurance in my rego.

The rego insurance is a rip off. You have to pay it and it's the same for both low and high risk drivers which means that the careful drivers are subsidising the idiots. No such thing as free market economy in Australia when it comes to these things.

I also found that when both buying a used car and buying insurance that there is very little difference in the price e.g. I got about 5 different insurance quotes and they only differed by a max of about 2%. There is so much competition between car dealers that their prices only differ by a few dollars. Also not as much scope for bargaining as in the UK. In UK you will be charged what the seller thinks they can get away with. Here it's very much tighter.

Beware the dreaded taxes. Just when you think you've negotiated a good deal they stick a load of taxes on top. There are stealth taxes on just about everything in Oz and, unlike the UK, the price you see is not usually the price you pay - the taxes get added on afterwards.

We paid $400 fully comp for our Nissan Terrano, they used our full no claims (from the UK) but didn't want proof!!?? We are insured with the RAC (perth)
