Can't stress enough
the importance of opening a bank account in aus before you go.
This takes quite a bit of time to do and a lot of stress, unless already an aus bank customer.
Ann-Marie paid for the flights last night £1,600+ non-refundable.
This morning got a phone cll from the docs regarding an x-ray taaken this week for my chest ( have had coughing fits for the last two months ), not looking good, could be nothing but have got to see a specialist early next week so stress is through the roof at the moment ( hence the drunken stupor ).
Bank account. VERY IMPORTANT !!!!
SORT IT NOW !!!!!!
don't suddenly sit there thinking " what else do we have to sort out.....................................Ohhhhhhhh a bank account........................" Fatal.

Have opened ours with Commonwealth Bank via London.
We nominated a Bank in Adelaide and can put money in while we are here and will activate the account when we go on our validation trip in December.
Best of luck at the Docs

Thanks for the comments guys.
We decided upon HSBC ( all of a sudden we thought .................." shit,................we're forgetting something"
Next thing we're filling in an online application form and then printing requested documents and taking them to our local branch ( of which we are not customers) . The lady looked at us like we had just arrived in some high powered light speed capable form of transport with dull glazed over eyes ( obviously thinking about her son was doing in his exams etc.) and told us we had to send it all to aus.
I explained that it would seem strange them asking me to print these documents and take them to my local branch if all i had to do was fill them in and send them direct. She sat back ,looked at them for a further 30 seconds and then repeated that they had to be sent to aus.
The following day ( yesterday ) i spoke to a chap from " down south " who told me it was the responsibility of our local branch to fill in the form but we would need to take our application form aswell. He also gave us a freephone number " 24 hour helpdesk run by the people opening your account, these are the people to talk to if you're having any problems".
So i did, 8.30pm last night.
Yopung lass tells me the account department opens at 8.30am and i would need to talk to them.
11.45pm , i'm on the phone to aus being told " that account has been terminated "
So, today we start again, only the laptop is supposed to be in transit and being repaired as we speak.
Like i said, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF SORTING OUT A BANK ACCOUNT.
Paul.
Medically.......................No idea, neither has the doc, has taken 3 blood samples today, i have inflamed/swollen glands in my chest, doctor has no idea if that has any reason whatsoever to do with the coughing fits.
I think it's the crack
Anyway, thank you for your concern and i'll be sure to keep you posted on the bank front.

Hope all will be OK at the Docs Paul
We did the same as Jo with the Commonwealth.
Opened an account a few months ago at one of their open days in a posh hotel. ( you go on the Commonwealth web site and it shows the venues for all over the UK... phone up and get an appointment... have to have your visa though).
We havn't had money in the account yet and will transfer direct to our Brissy account via HIFX at no charge.

We have accounts with HSBC here in the UK and opened accounts in Oz with them too. We've had excellent service, although opening the OZ account here at a UK branch did end up being a team effort as no-one had done it before. They were all very helpful and were on the phone to the "gurus" whenever they weren't sure of anything. We just sat back and were entertained by it all. Considering they weren't sure it didn't take long at all, only about 30 minutes. When we did our rekkie in May we picked up our ATM cards and cheque book and all went extremely smoothly. We've had excellent service and I would recommend them as in has on-line banking. Something that's important to us. Oh, and I definitely do NOT work for HSBC!!
Paul, hope all goes well at the Docs.

Hope that you are soon feeling better. You are right about the bank account. We will get our cards etc when we arrive as we opened our account over 6 months ago.

Again, thanks fior the comments.
Was a tad typsy last night. It's probably nothing but you know how paranoid you get, especially now that everything is paid for etc etc.
Was quite interested to hear about the commonwealth etc, how does this account compare with hsbc for availability in aus and charges, interest etc.
Thanks, Paul
