He was born in Canberra... perhaps this is why he had a strong dislike of it. From what I understand, it's very much a Capital city and nothing else. Kind of like Ottawa is to Canada... parliment house is mildy interesting and the rest is a bore. *yawn*

Passed through the other day - forest will take some years to recover from bushfires, looking shabby due to drought - maybe another el-nino (drought) year, election coming up - maybe no significant hirings 'til after then who knows.
If you don't have a job to go to, suggest give it a miss for a while.

Re: Canberra-Yes or No?
Have been there a couple of times, but not lived there. One of my best drinking mates back in London came from there & lived there for the first 20 or so years of her life.
So for what it's worth....
My Canberra mate reckoned nowhere in Europe offered such good ski-ing as that which you get round Canberra. While she was growing up, she loved the city's serenity. She also claimed, though, that she found London much more stimulating as an adult, & decided to stay there, & not go home as she'd planned (but I'm sure this was at least partly due to some rather charming male company )
The National Art Gallery of Australia is terrific: not so large that you get knackered going round it, has a great sculpture garden, splendid collection of indigenous art too, but the piece de resistance is undoubtably Jackson Pollock's 'Blue Poles', which is truly awesome when you see it 'in the flesh' (I visited the 2nd time just to see it again). Wow.
The 2 Oz Parliament buildings are amazing - and of course the 'alternative' Aborginal parliament - the friendliest political activists I've ever met (wonder if it's still there?).
And then there's The Dish (the Parkes Observatory, as seen in the movie of the same name...)
Oh dear, all this enthusing - I feel a holiday in Canberra coming on!
Anya.

I did a business trip there. Nothing particularly bad.
There must be pleasant suburbs.
Part of the town centre reminded me exactly like Basingstoke, or a shopping centre from an English shopping arcade of the 1970s before malls arrived. I couldn't work it out for a while.

Cheers you lot.I still got my heart set on WA though-but you never know how things will pan out.Especially when you need to get a job ASAP on landing.
So exploring our options is very important -and i knew nothing about canberra and surrounds as i had never looked elsewhere -until i saw the push for new teachers.

Re: Canberra-Yes or No?
Hi
I am not an expert on Canberra, after only visiting there for the day. I liked it well enough for a visit, and really enjoyed the trips to the old parliament building and war memeorial, and the new parliament building. Well worth seeing. But as for a place to live, I would not like to live there as I felt really claustrophic when I was there, which is strange thing to say but that was how I felt. It reminded me a lot of Craigavon, for anyone who knows Northern Irealnd. Planned town with no heart or sould really. Sorry to be negative, but I know you wanted people to be honest with how they felt. I hope you get sorted with a place to live, who knows you may completely disagree with me and love the place.
