Re: Can I take my shotgun?
Yes you can but I wouldnt recommend it.
I left my shotgun back in the UK prior to coming out here. I arranged a firearms licence and had the gun registered. Then the paperwork trail began. You would have thought I was trying to import the Iraqi Super Gun.
Had I have known the hassle it would cause me and my mate in the UK to ship it out, I would never have bothered so my advise to you is unless it is extremely valuable or old, sell it and buy another one when you get over here. (you will need a State issued firearms licence)

Isn't it amazing the amount of childish comments that come out when someone mentions that they shoot.
In short you can't bring it. The only way is to do what POW148 suggested and import it from a UK dealer to an Aussie dealer once you have secured a License and a Permit to Acquire.
Brave man, I have looked into importing some specialist gear from Austria and the US which some of the dealers are not really bothered with. Even importing an IPSC holster rig is against the law unless you have an importers license.
After the months of hassle with he Licensing Services Division getting by Handgun license I was surprised at how simple it was to get the full Longarms license. The Longarms safety course was laughable compared to the Handgun and Holster courses, "What is the correct way to hold a rifle/shotgun while climbing over a wire fence?" That was a little worrying, but in general the Aussies seem far more mature and matter-of-fact about the handling of firearms.

Agree. Shooting is awesome fun but our pinko liberal governments and media have demonised it due to the actions of a few nutjobs. Sad but true.

The legislation in Australia is as tight as I would like it. It is NOT easy to get a firearms license here and even tougher to get a permit to acquire a firearm.
That said, actual firearms offences and specifically deaths by firearms in the UK are nothing compared to those committed using knives. Knife crime in the UK is pandemic and far worse that any perceived threat from firearms held legally for sport shooting.

Tougher sentencing for crimes involving firearms offences is the only way to go.
