If you can afford to buy a boat then stay at the Palazzo Versace at Southport Marina,

we've no intention of buying a boat, the company my partner works for has a boat in the show and hes going up with it, saw it as an opportunity for a weekend away. but thanks for the sarcastic response anyway

Assume you mean the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show (Brissie one is later in the year in Brissie). Anyway, coaches run to and from the Marina from the Parklands show ground which is just behind Southport, a couple of Ks from Surfers so if you search on wotif for accommodation either in Surfers (if you want to experience it ) or better still Broadbeach, it's a short hop by cab or bus to the showground. When we went a couple of years ago unless you were special and had a fancy pass, it was the only way to get there, don't think its changed. The bus fare is all part of the entrance ticket for the boat show.

Certainly no point in staying in or around SC - sod all to do there imo but then I don't like the area because to us it looks like an upmarket prison camp from the outside. Plenty of others love the area so what do I know Marina is nice though

Holiday Inn Surfers Paradise is clean and modern (after big fairly recent renovation). It's in a great spot for bar hopping in Surfers Paradise. They often have specials/credit card rewards partners etc. Try and get into a King Suite which have water views I think.

ahh I see they keep saying the boat needs to be ready for the Brisbane boat show then we found out its Sanctuary Cove? didnt realise there were 2 shows. I'm hoping we will get passes but not sure, anyway that doesnt matter I'm not really going for the boats

OK so I gather Broadbeach is quieter than Surfers, I did look on Wotif but there are so many areas in the drop down list I just didnt know how far away stuff was etc a friend suggested Burleigh Heads? must admit I fancy seeing what Surfers is all about though be a bit of a shock from Tas

Burleigh is nice, only about another 15 minutes down the coast. Broadbeach is next door to Surfers but where the grownups tend to stay as you can still get to 'experience' Surfers but not have the noise. Jupiters is supposed to be quite good to stay in but can be noisy if you're there on a weekend as you have all the bars, restaurants and casino opening up into the main atrium. There was a post a while ago from someone who stayed there, I'll see if I can find it.

we stayed at mermaid beach which is next beach on ... at the turtle beach complex ... it was lovely, we were there beginning of june (remember? it pissed it down for 3 days solid after we got there after a 3 month drought )
we hired a really cheap car (a toyota corolla for about $35/day) from transtasman car hire ... and drove up to brisbane with no problems; well, you've experienced my driving so you know not much fazes me
