Dear anyone
Can you tell me how we go about opening an australian bank account. I've just received an application for Commenwealth bank - bank account but it says to send it 2 wks before you arrive , well I don't quite know when that will be at the mo. Surely I can open an account with someone here and have access to the money? We need to transfer back some funds we have with HIFX a) to make some money as exchange rate is lower and b) to pay mum and dad back some money they kindly lent to us!

Bugger. My daughter works in National in Melbourne, I might have been able to help if you had been coming here.

As far as I'm aware you can open an account earlier than that but you may not be able to access the funds until you arrive in Australia. Why not ring someone at the CBA London office and ask them - while you're online, they also will handle transmission of funds from the UK to Australia.
