There lies the root doesn't it ? I'm not particularly slagging off your revered government circles economist friend but find me 2 that agree on anything whether they work for governments or on the high street. They play with statistics and come up with different results from the same base numbers. All perfectly correct of course so it's an interpretation. And as for your final comment........... |

Cons...Well, it's a bit of a pisser looking at my front and back yard and seeing them a vibrant GREEN colour everyday, all year 'round...come to think of it, everything around here is green...lawn, plants, trees, rainforest, blah, blah, you get the idea...Hmm, Cairns is such a small place...from our gaff at the beaches to southside takes 30 minutes and then it's off to Mission beach / Tully / Brownsville...OR North, The Daintree is an hour and a bit away...That's a pisser and spending our weekends up there in the pristine World Heritage Listed rainforest can be such a bind:rolleyes: at times...What else...well, we get the occasional bug in the house and a toad or two on the lawn, particularly now its the pisser wet season (geez, bloody rain, bucket loads of it - litres, NO, gallons), no doubt by end of March it'll be be fine and gloriously sunny and STILL t-shirt weather...
God, I hate this place...   Any advice on the locals? How are they at accepting new-comers? Friendly mob? How about the supermarkets and petrol? Do you pay more up there? |

Any advice on the locals? How are they at accepting new-comers? Friendly mob? How about the supermarkets and petrol? Do you pay more up there? We've been living here 2 and a half years and have settled here just fine - made some great friends (mainly Aussies), never had any 'new-comer' problems - a bit of ribbing which is all in jest and if you give it back they love it!:D So, yes, all in all a very friendly mob and no hassles at all. Only advice I think worth handing out is be yourself, if folks like you for it - fine, if they don't - bugger 'em. There are arsey idiots the world over. I can't comment on supermarket prices as we haven't lived anywhere else recently in Australia to say but now the price of bananas have gone back down :), I usually spend around $200 a week for a family of four (can be more sometimes). Fuel, costs me $55 a week for a full tank (Rav 4) of unleaded ( a month or two back it was $60) - to be perfectly honest, I haven't a clue what the price is at the bowser - I stick it in and go - I don't worry about it too much, as I have to have it and lifes too short to whinge. |

Byeee! Don't think you'll find anyone who knows me that would agree with your summation whether in the UK, Australia or online. Oh, apart from one or two Trolls I've had a spat with. But then, you seem very able and willing to misjudge and misinform. |

They are links to search results so are lists to a number of different threads. This is not technically possible as the forum is continually changing with extra data being added. So, you will have to put Cairns in the search box yourself to be able to call up all the relevant threads. In the meantime this is one of the most informative ones..... http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...ghlight=cairns Sorry :o |
Re: Cairns v Brisbane
Just have a few questions for Bix or other Cairns locals - If you would be so kind to share your views, it would be appreciated.
1. Is overseas travel less expensive from Cairns?... seeings its closer than say Syd or Melb. 2. I see you have thunderstorms and rain everyday for the rest of the week, does that get you down at all? 3. Is fruit fairly cheap there? considering alot of it comes from that region. 4. Do they wear suit and tie in the offices? 5. Do the tourists give you the shits at all during peak season? 6. Rentals? ...easy enough to find?.. Estate Agents easy going? 7. Decent pubs? 8. Do they follow rugby league there. I guess people follow the Cowboys? I have read something about them being AFL fans too? 9. Ever feel isolated? 10. The Cairns vs Townsville rivalry... How bad is it? 11. How do the black and white fellas get on?... Any trouble?.. Do they have a mission there? 12. Name 5 things, besides the humidity, that you would change about the place? |
Re: Cairns v Brisbane
As a person who arrived in Townsville without ever having been to oz before, we are chuffed to bits. Its a beautiful place, spread out and not built up..though that is coming. We have beautiful beaches, magnetic island, rainforest less than an hour away, amazing views of the mountains that surround us. Ive been to Cairns too, and I liked it there too, its very different to Townsville, more built up, but then it caters to more tourism than us. Port douglas is stunning(better when shown around by bix and da boss).
I cannot see how people can judge places they have never been to, and are only making assumptions by hear say, or what locals say...most locals in Townsville dont like Cairns and prefer Brissie. Like anywhere, what suits one may not suit another. For us, Townsville is superb, great for our kids to grow up in and stunning scenery and lots to experience. We love the fact we are central to most things, Cairns is only 4hrs north, mission beach and Innisfail etc are only 3hrs. As for being brownsville, its very lush and green, its not arrid and dusty, the grass does get scorched by the sun, but we are allowed to water it. Racism throughout Australia is very obvious, probably because people just say what they think, its no worse here, not in my experience anyway. Townsville and Cairns are beautiful places and both have loads on offer, both are very laid back. Cairns gets much more busy compared to TSV due to its tourism, but that said, if you have just come from the uk you wont think either place gets busy at all. I love living in the tropics, I feel lucky we landed where we are, and lucky that we have Cairns, and the far north all within a days travel. We have never found the climate a problem, if you have aircon you will adjust. dont rule out places just on other peoples opinions etc, go see for yourself what the tropics can offer.:D Trish |

You notice when waiting for something to be sent from Brisbane etc. 10. The Cairns vs Townsville rivalry... How bad is it? just friendly rivalry/rib digging stuff. I havent seen the barbed wire and barricades go up yet. 11. How do the black and white fellas get on?... Any trouble?.. Do they have a mission there? 12. Name 5 things, besides the humidity, that you would change about the place? 2. make it compulsory for overseas students to spend 6 months doing an intensive cycle helmet on head and roads rules course.:D 3. Should have longer holidays. 4. shorter working hours to spend more time in the pool. 5. Ban all the natural colour around the place, it gets a bit much:D WW |
