 With a nursing background you'll have to swot up on box jellyfish stings (and a few others like blue bottles) (can be fatal), rock fish (can be fatal), the various poisonous snakes (can be lethal) that abound, the many and various insect bites and tropical diseases they carry (can be fatal) and of coarse sharks. You don't have to worry about crocs though. They usually take days to find the croc to get the body parts back;)
Thats funny because I've been living in North Queensland for 31 years and have never seen one crocodile in the river (even though they are there), have dived every second weekend and only ever seen (harmless) reef sharks (and wear a shark shield just in case), have never been stung by a box jellyfish, and have only seen a box jellyfish in a surf lifesavers net after they have purposely and routinely dragged the beaches...actually I've seen them somewhere else too...on television....Blue bottles can be fatal if you're stung by a giant mythological mutant blue bottle from the great depths - usually adults who are stung experience pain, but don't usually die. The stone fish you refer to don't live at the beach, they tend to live elsewhere. Unless you're foolish enough to go wading barefoot into areas that they might be in, (and then you'd still have to be unlucky), I'd say you might be luckier getting run over by a bus on the way to the shopping centre in Cairns city centre - at least it's more statistically probable. Snakes "that abound" eh? Funny, cause I've only ever seen a few non fatal snakes in my backyard in 31 years, and also when I've been bushwalking, (when I am actually intruding into their territory, so, so be it). (Although I once saw a taipan crossing the road at a suburban pedestrian crossing because Target was having a Skin sale). Not many people go to see a nurse at a hospital from a mossie bite either. Whats the other "many and various insects" about that would cause someone to go to hospital due to "bites" - many and various bites remember. What's the insect borne tropical diseases that are "fatal" by the way in North Queensland? Cause of death: Ross River fever...?? Aching joints and fatigue aren't much fun but you're certainly not going to die from it. I suppose that these animals are the new Weapons of Mass Destruction, assuming of course that all it takes is the media, hype, lack of experience/knowledge to help shape a sense of perspective? I dont mean to be rude but I'm getting a little fed up with reading the same sort of thing on this site and my sarcastic side is raising its ugly head. Sorry. These wonderful creatures are there, but you rather painlessly learn to live WITH them. Smart people use common sense at the beach or at rivers, (ie they don't dive into the Daintree river for example), and these animals are simply not as visible in daily life as some would like to believe. We're only part of the ecosystem after all. Everything has it's place. I'm glad knowing that such wildlife exists as it should..like the wolves once did in Scotland....watch out for those hungry hound ghosts at night time....aaarooooooooohh!! Werewolves of London....aroooooooooohh!.... _________________ "Oh and dont worry about the 'nasties' people love it - we had the same b4 we came here - its really not that bad, honest". Sorry about my rather opinionated empassioned post to one of the other people on your thread - I'll let you get back to celebrating your decision now. Keep me updated if you wish! Kind regards, V. |

Re: Cairns it is!
Hey all, Sorry for butting in on the thread. But I have to ask,
Why Cairns? Narrow minded me didn't even consider it! I just figure it would be too hot & uncomfortable living there. But then I noticed this little thread, and it made me start to think thats it could actually be a nice place to live. Are my pre-conceptions wrong? Mmmmmmm' |
Re: Cairns it is!
You had to do it Vegemite didn't you, now everyone will want to move here
We like to keep it that everyone thinks we are constantly living life on the edge up this way along with the searing humidity that zaps your energy and you forgot to mention the massive pythons that drop down from the trees as you walk along and swallow you up whole (another one I am always told about!!!) all these things stop us from having such a great chilled out and laid back life that we should have ;) |
Re: Cairns it is!
Summer can be pretty hot and uncomfortable wherever you are in qld but at least cairns has no water restrictions (yet), it's green and lush with loads to do and see...:)

Re: Cairns it is!
I have to take issue with Vegemite and Snappy.
It doesn't have everything. Can't find a furkin zebra anywhere. But other than that..... |
Re: Cairns it is!
HCTS,
Hey HCTS, put yourself in the photo in the link below! Check out where you'll be swimming. http://www.wettropics.gov.au/st/rain...LakeEacham.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/aquat...ke_Eacham2.jpg (As you can see it just plainly suxs). The water down there is crystal clear fresh water in an extinct volcanic crater lake, situated in the Cairns hinterland - the Atherton Tablelands. It's a great place to take the kiddies etc to swim and there's BBQs etc around the lake, so see ya there for the BBQ?? Or what about here: http://www.stellaresorts.com.au/imag...Cove-Beach.jpg (Poohey. Another terrible place...) Decide which one you like and let me know! ;) :D I'm getting excited for you, like I said! :D At some point we'll all have to have a discussion on here about which area in Cairns to live in etc. |

Thanks people for not taking offence at my passionate post up there too, for seeing it in good humour, and for not frying my arse in the BBQ, I sometimes worry too much that I will offend people in my rebel green boots and conservationist t-shirt...I just love nature and all that beautiful wilderness too much. Okay...so what about 4W driving? Anyone up for the challenge after the BBQ? |

Green lush rainforests on your doorstep, beautiful sandy beaches, during the stinger season there are plenty of swimming holes (without crocs!) to cool off in, stunning scenery on your doorstep but also amazing places to visit such as the Tablelands (they even grow tea up there something I had never seen before coming here), scrumptious exotic fruit straight from the local farmers (nothing beats a mangosten in my opinion), excellent schooling, fantastic shops, the starting point of some great adventure days out to Port Douglas, Daintree, Babinda rocks, Tablerlands, Kuranda, Mission Beach etc etc etc etc, even a great place to start to go and visit the lava tubes along the Savannah Way so when visitors come you will never be bored. It rains here but go a few miles down the road it can be brilliant sunshine. It is growing every second and has over taken the Gold Coast the other week on the sales of units (that shows it popularity. Very laid back city compared to the larger cities of Queensland. Yes it gets humid and yes within a year you will acclimatise, every shopping centre, car and most homes have air con until that point of time. Our 2nd summer and we lived in a non air conditioned house and even now as the temps are still high compared to UK temps I am starting to feel cold as winter has started.
BUT beware of those killer snakes, spiders, jellyfish, crocs, sharks, cyclones and whatever else puts everyone off form coming here as I love it just as it is :sneaky: Mission Beach...man, that just sux again. What a scabby, skanky unjustified hole! You and your family have my sympathies, what an unfortunate godforsaken place....and dont forget those snappy crocodilian reptilians left over from the Mesozoic epoch. Don't go there, don't go there, don't go there...;) How am I doing Snappy? How do I do multi-quoting in here again? :curse: |
