Default Caiming Tax back

Can anyone end this thread positively?
I gave my notice in at work this week and leave 21st March.
I done this as we expext Visas by then and have a job lined up.
Our Application was 22nd October 2007 (paper snail mail) and was aknowledged 3 days later (WOW). We dont have a case officer as yet but the reason I jacked my job in is because of tax reasons. Because I leave just before the new tax year does it mean I can claim all my tax back for 2007 - 2008?
If so then the timings a result but if I dont get it back then maybe I need to retract my notice.
Basically the tax Ive earned is worth more than 2 months take home pay so its wise to have a rest before we go rather than work for the tax man?
Anyone had the same experience please advise.

Cheers

Chris

I think you have got yourself muddled. You will get some back but not much. The later you get into the tax year (and March 21st is virtually the end) the nearer to no difference it will make.

Hi Chris,

I don't know the answer to your question, but I also, would be interested to know.

I'm sure somebody will be along soon to answer your query.

Donna.

I'm not sure about this but if you have been living and working for almost all of the tax year then i don't think there is a reason why you should be able to claim any tax back unless someone has told you otherwise. If you don't get any response from anyone on here then maybe give your citizens advice a ring. We defo didn't claim any tax back.

The best time to claim tax back is when you have earned your personal allowance and no more. For most people this is £5000, so as soon as you have earned that amount after April 6th, quit your job.

As an example, if you earn £2500 per month (before tax), then quit on June 6th.

If you stop earning on March 21st you will be unlikely to get any tax back at all.

Could be worse, you could be unemployed, no money and no visa.

I don't know you from Adam and all that, but I can't help wondering if you are moving to Aus for the right reasons. It costs a fortune to do and if money is the main driver you might be better off staying in the UK.

Chris, do you get overtime, and can you delay submitting your timesheets until after April 6th? If so, see if you can get paid the overtime for tax year 2007/8 in tax year 2008/9. This will be very financially beneficial tax wise.

cheers buzzy
nice reply much more worth replying to.
Were living in a caravan as moved out last week and thought it would be a good idea to leave for tax reasons, not a money motive i just dont want to work for free if i dont need to.
Thought maybe i could claim the whole year as every little helps especially burning all this gas in this van lol.
Not migrating for money reasons either
Money dont motivate us!

Cheers Buzz
