Today is the day I am meant to be giving my notice (by phone as he lives miles away) yet I can't bring myself to pick up the phone-feel sick every time I think about it.It's not like I love what I do so I guess it's because it's another big, unreversable leap towards the unknown

Also not quite sure what to say...hope I don't cry

Don't see it as scarey! See as it as another step in the list of things to do before you leave! It just makes everything a bit more real, but in a good way. I handed in my notice 8 weeks ago, and as soon as I did it meant I could get excited about the future!!!!!
GOOD LUCK.

Is it not better to keep it formal and write an official resignation letter?
Type in "handing in your notice letters" in Google if you don't know what to write and take it from there. Then, once that's done, you can ask for a reference letter for a future employer.

If you're really valued why not ask for unpaid leave for 6 -12 months so you have a fall back if the move doesn't go as planned. You can always resign by email at a later date. (don't forget to ask for a reference before leaving though)

just laughing at the thought of my lovely but very cash conscious employer giving me unpaid leave. Seriously thanks for the idea-it's a nice one-but my position is such that it's stand alone and needs filling immediately-and alas for me there is no way he's pay double

hehe..handing in my notice is always my FAVOURITE part of making a big change in my life!! Yes I miss old colleagues but it's like temporarily casting off the shackles and being free to do something more exciting.
good luck!
