Default buying a new laptop in Qld

My old laptop has not been working since the storm last week. I took it to a pc shop and they said that I may need a new mainboard. It does not get past the opening windoes screen and will not start in safe mode.

I am now thinking about buying a new one - anyone got any suggestions on types and the best place to buy them from? I am in SE Qld.

Thanks

You could do a lot worse than a Dell machine. www.dell.com.au

That way you can spec it yourself or just take a recommended system. They are hard to beat pricewise and pretty good machines compared to some rubbish out there.

Hi Debs,
I bought an Acer Aspire 1680 laptop when we arrived here 12 months ago.
It's been in for 3 repairs in that time.
Mousepad gave up and dvd drive twice. I hardly ever use the drive !
Heap of crap in my opinion.
Don't have any recommendation for you except don't buy Acer. They are often good value if you compare the specs.....but now I know why.
I won't buy another that's for sure.

Oh, and don't forget to claim tax relief for the new one.

Your Mousepad gave up??

How can a Mousepad pad give up, other than if you leave it in direct sunlight and it melts into a chemical blob?

Did you mean touchpad? Or the 'nipple' that many IBMs come with. Apparently in Far North Queensland, the IBM nipples can get very stiff when you finger them too much.

If it is booting up it definatly doesn't need a new motherboard, maybe a new hard drive and Windows reinstalling (this would cost about £120 in the UK)

If this is the sort of advice OZ IT companies are giving then I should do well when I setup my IT company when I arrive!!

As to buying a new laptop, I would recommend an HP NX6110, these are built far better than Dell and Acer laptops, I sell HP, Dell and Acer, but I always try and sell HP because of the quality of their products

I have just bought a compaq presario B1800 and it is fab. Megamart, which is part of the Myers group had a good selection as did Harvey Norman. Just make sure you get one with enough memory and hard disk space.

Bixy, I have an Acer Extensa & love it, absolutely no problems at all & it goes like the clappers. Its got an extended back to base warranty (which I havent had to use yet), but I am very happy with it.

Sounds like you got a lemon - I know what thats like, my first ever comp that I got from Harvey Norman had every single component replaced, some of them up to 4 times (all still under warranty!!! :scared: :scared: ) before it became landfill .

(you realise of course that Ive probably jinxed my laptop now )

Try grays.com.au which is an online auction site that companies like Dell, HP and Toshiba use to clear surplus stock. I got a TOSHIBA TECRA A3 CELERON M 1.5GHZ for $925 including delivery and one years warranty.

If your employer has a salary sacrifice scheme then you may be able to write the cost off against income tax and reclaim GST.

Cheers
