Buying a Car ..... some questions

Buying a Car ..... some questions
Hi,
Looking for some help. We're moving out in 2 weeks and want to buy a car as soon as possible so doing some research before we go.
We're going to Melbourne then travelling up to Brisbane. Any suggestions on the cheapest place to buy a car? What's the story with:-
1. Rego
2. Stamp Duty
3. GST
4. Fully comp. insurance
If you buy a car in one state and move to another are there implications?
Thanks

Isn't the price advertised (or agreed) the price you pay, surely they don't then add GST on top, and stamp duty, surely not ???

yep, I'm not sure if it varies from state to state but here in VIC at least stamp duty is the order of the day if purchasing a new or used car. If buying a used car, you will also have to make sure that a roadworthy check has been done on the car in the last 30 days by a state approved mechanic, or the sale will not be legal.
regards

I could do with some advice on this too.
We are moving out next week and will be flying into Sydney. We are visiting people for a couple of weeks there and want to buy a car then. We will then want to drive up to Alice and stay with the inlaws for a month then drive to Adelaide where we will settle.
What is the deal with insurance and registering the car in Adelaide? It will be on a NSW plate and will be insured in NSW.
Can this be done?

So if you take the car to another state you have to pay Rego and stamp duty again

To research local pricing try www.tradingpost.com.au or www.carsales.com.au .
In NSW get a revs check done to check for theft or finance.

When we moved from NSW to QLD we waited till the rego's ran out before renewing them/changing them over, at the QLD Motor Registry.

REGO
Like UK Car Tax, you get a sticker in the window showing the expiry date. If the car has this one (second hand ones tend to), then you are OK up until that date. Rego includes 3rd party insurance.
INSURANCE
Fully comp is optional and up to you
GST
Usually included in the price unless you are talking brand new and/or vehicle for business use. Same as VAT in that regards for UK.
STAMP DUTY
When negotiating your price with the card dealer, make it very clear that you are talking about the "on-road" price INCLUDING stamp duty etc. Eg, if the car is $55k, you offer $45k, he says $50k and you say OK if that includes the Stamp etc.
Worked for me.
ROADWORTHINESS CERT
Closest thing to MoT. Not annual but a requirement for all second hand cars to have.
Good luck!

Re: Buying a Car ..... some questions
having bought a car in melbourne and then moved to brisbane i can tell you exactly what you do.
firstly, you have to get the car registered in queensland within 14 days of permanently moving here.
to do this you need ID, proof of origin of vehicle, bill of sale, proof of permanent qld address, a safety certificate (RWC in Vic). you have to turn up at queensland transport with the car, and surrender the number plates (they give you a receipt).
you can then contact vicroads for a refund of rego/ctp (less admin charges of course).
