Default buying a car HELP NEEDED !!

I am leaving for Perth in March 2008 (visa 163), and at present researching what cars are available etc. Does anyone know what a rego is ? I guess it is some sort of MOT. And do they have the equivilant of an HPi service to check for finance/stolen or damaged cars? Any other info would be welcome, such as the registration process, i.e what do you get in terms of paperwork when you buy a car? As you all know we get a V5/MOT etc, whats the score in Perth?

Many thanks in advance.

Regards Kevin

I'm also interested as we are about to buy a camper van for the weekends (main car is provided by company).

I think also in NSW at least that you have to pay 'stamp duty' tax when you register the car is your name. Any one know how much this is or how it works?

Rego is our annual road tax disk equiv. However, it also includes a third party insurance which is mandatory.

Your issued with a vehicle registration document (rego papers).

REVS is the register for finance, insurance claims etc and any dealer will supply you with a copy of the check.

You have to pay stamp duty in any state as follows :

ACT

Stamp duty on new vehicles in the ACT is charged as follows

3% of the vehicle price inclusive of GST up to $45,000
5% for every dollar over $45,000.
New South Wales

Stamp duty on vehicle purchases is charged as follows:

3% of the vehicle price inclusive of GST up to $45,000
5% for every dollar over $45,000.
Example - a vehicle costing $65,000, stamp duty would be charged at 3% of $45,000 plus 5% of $20,000 (the amount above the $45,000 threshold) = $1,350 + $1,000 = $2,350

Queensland

Stamp duty in Queensland is pretty simple and the cheapest in Australia

2% of the purchase price
Victoria

Victoria has three thresholds for stamp duty charges though the percentage applies to the total market value of the vehicle.

2.5% of the vehicle price up to $35,000
4% of the total price where this lies between $35,000 and $45,000
5% of the total price where this is over $45,000
South Australia

South Australia has a low threshold that must be observed

$60 for the first $3,000 of the purchase price (or part thereof)
4% for every dollar over $3,000
Tasmania

Tasmania has a structure based on three price margins

3% of the purchase price up to $35,000
11% for every dollar between $35,000 and $45,000
4% for every dollar over $45,000
Western Australia

WA has probably the most complicated stamp duty structure in Australia!

2.75% of the vehicle price up to $15,000
A sliding scale is used between $15,000 and $40,000 from 2.75% to 6.5%
6.5% for every dollar over $40,000

Thank you for your help.

Does this apply to second hand cars bought privately?

Is this paid at the RTA when I go to change the owners name?

Rego is short for registration, this is paid six monthly or yearly, up to you. Rego also includes 3rd party personal injury. You will need to take out insurance if you want it, though it isn't compulsory. No MOT in WA.
When you find the car you like you can have a REVS check done https://bizline.docep.wa.gov.au/revs/ this is similar to your HPI service.
The seller will have a vehicle transfere form, all details are to be filled in and signed by both parties, the seller than sends a copy to the Licensing department, gives you a copy along with the most recent rego papers. You will get a bill in the mail for the transfere., $3.00 for every $100.00 of the value of the car plus $14.00. Rego stays with the vehicle, so if you buy a vehicle with only a month left you will have to renew it, so factor this in the final price of the car, it can be as much as $300 for 6 months, it goes by weight of the vehicle in WA as to how much it costs, so the smaller the car the cheaper it is.

Happy motoring

As far as I'm aware it goes by weight.

Yes, it does and yes it is.

It is based on the perceived value of the car too, so even if you get a good deal on a car, you may still pay stamp on the book price.

If you are buying new, then try and look out for an all exclusive deal, where the dealer will throw in the stamp, CTP, Rego, number plate and dealer delivery. All that lot can put several thousand $ onto the sticker price of a new car.

Kia are currently offering 'Drive away' pricing, and Suzuki have been running Super Saturdays and Sundays where for cars purchased on that day, they will throw in all the on the road costs, and an extended warranty.
