Hi all

Does anybody know what the job market is like for Building Services Design Engineers in Oz, particularly Adelaide and Perth, and what are wages like.

Not sure about building services, but there is a huge demand for design engineers in Perth. I'm an electrical design engineer & have been approached by several agencies/companies already & I'm not even there yet. They are desperate for people. I arrive in Perth on Sunday 2nd October & already have interviews lined up on the Tuesday & Wednesday. Contract rates are about $50-70/hour. I don't know about permanent salaries as I will never take a permanent job. Be careful which agencies you deal with as there seem to be a lot of cowboys/chancers out there, same as here really.

PM me if you want any contacts/links that I have. I have no info on Adelaide.

HI Mick

There is a trade organisation similar to HVCA (Heating and Ventilating contractos) in the Uk, based in Melbourne, would be worth contacting them for a list of Building Services Co, I have the details somewhere Iwill see If I can find them for you.

I have found lots of BSE design jobs here in Brisbane and Iam sure its the same in other cities

Thanks Rachel

The details would be useful if you could find them and if you dont mind me asking what sort of rates do engineers get either perm or contract. I guess this also differs from state to state? Are you a mechanical engineer?

Thanks again

Hi Mick

The trade association here in oz is

AMCA Australia
30 Cromwell Street
BURWOOD VIC 3125

Ph: (03) 9888-8266
Fx: (03) 9888-8459

web address is www.amca.com.au, they have branches all over so it is worth checking them out. Rates vary drastically and are very much dependant on qualifications, years experience, skills etc. To give you an idea Saturdays papers last week for Brisbane and the Gold Coast had approx 25 jobs in this category , that is not including anything on the craft side. Wages for newly qualified min. experience you are looking at around $40,000 - $50,000 also a lot depends on the size of company, I have seen jobs advertised in Brisbane for $120,000 8 yrs exp. (You will have do the conversion!). Wages over here are not as good as the UK but I guess you have already heard this.

It Will vary also from state to state Sydney will be higher wages then here in Queensland , and I am sure Melbourne would be, really not sure about Perth. Talk to AMCA they would give you a better idea or HVCA in London might be able to assist, they are the sister Co of AMCA.

You should have no problem finding work here, there is a big skills shortage much more so than in the UK , you may however get frustrated as they are behind in some aspects of work/life!

Not sure what your specialism is but you will find AC and Ref much bigger here for obvious reasons! Not a huge demand for Heating Engineers, well not here in the Sunshine state

Hope it helps Rachel

My hubbie is a senior design engineer for a large automotive/ manufacturing company in Scotland, so far he's not had much response to his CV in Brisbane - we get the impression that he will have more luck once he's over there - does anyone else agree with this?

It worries me as our savings will be fairly limited and we are relying on Marc to get a job fairly quickly (within 2 months) is this feasible?

Can anyone recommend any good agencies for him to sign up when we arrive? We are finding that most design jobs are in civil engineering and he's not qualified in that area - Marcs got honours in Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

Seems to me that most of the design jobs are in project work (civil, electrical, piping etc). I haven't seen much advertised in manufacturing. If he is a mechanical engineer he might be able to get into project work?.

I had similar issues at first, took a while to find the job i actually wanted. I am a building surveyor and it takes a while to find the companies who employ people that do what you do.... i did find work after about 4 weeks though, only about half the pay i wanted but it bought us a bit of time... and got me an aussie reference.... we landed in March and it was june before i got a "proper" job in my field...

With respect to agencies he should just apply for everything on seek even vaguely related to what he does... this will get him in front of all the agencies very quickly. i found that only about 10% of them were any good but you don't really have any other option than to go through the motions of doing this.....

I reckon if you "work" 40 hours a week on getting a job for a full month you will get something in that time....

Also no harm in you looking for something in the meantime also just to help that initial stress factor. Mrs Jjonboy got a job on day 3 which really helped.... She did't like it much and only stayed there 8 weeks but it really helped $$$ wise...

Thanks for that JJonboy, yes i'm a nurse and should have no trouble getting a job in my field of community nursing - unfortunately all the employers want me to be actually IN Australia before they will consider me for posts but I have had positive feedback and have names and numbers to phone when I get there. I didn't mean it to sound like I wasn't going to work - I will def be working full time in Brisbane.
