Brownies
My 8 year old daughter has recently joined the Brownies
here and I thought that if she could continue this once we're
in Oz it would help her to settle and make friends.
After extensive searching I can only find references to Guides
in Oz and/or Queensland.
SO my question is (eventually) do they not have the different
age groups in Oz and call them all Guides or am I just not
looking in the right place?
Thanks for any help.
Karen.

Re: Brownies
Ok, I had a look too, I think they maybe had the different names for different ages groups first, but now it seems they call them all guides.
You've probably found , but oh well:
http://www.guidesqld.org/home.htm
I do see brownies mentioned sometimes, but they're in the same organisation as guides:
http://labradorgirlguides.netfirms.com/
Don't know what the difference is between scouts and guides, but girls can also join scouts:
www.scouts.com.au
(joeys, cubs, scouts and venturers)
(my brother was a scout in WA. He went on lots of camping trips, and in the summer we went sailing with the families with little sailing boats)

Hi
They do have guides overhere - all ages are called guides but they start from 5 and go well into adulthood. I have been guiding over here since my arrival 1 year ago (this weekend!) and they are alive and well. Depending on where you are going there are guides in every state. if you go to www.guidesaus.org.au this will give you all the information you need. it is a bit different from the UK but the principles are still the same. if you are coming to Queensland I can offer you help finding the most appropriate unit for your daughter, other than that I can refer you to the appropriate state.
I hope this helps

with her promise ceremony. The leader is Diana Grieve, do you
know her?
We are hoping to end up in the Bayside area (around the
Birkdale/Cleveland/Ormiston area) and it would be great if you
could let us know of any groups in that area.
Any thing that will help my daughter settle and make friends
is welcome.
Thanks Karen.

They were called Boy Scouts then. And you had to be a Boy
and the girls went into the "Girl Guides"
I am glad I kept reading after you wrote Don't know what the difference is between scouts and guides , otherwise my answer may have been amusing

If any of you have sons in the Scouts, on arrival here in Oz they can automatically join the Scout group as the Scouts have a rule that once a scout always a scout no matter where you are. Our son is about to join after Easter (there is a 6 month waiting list roughly and he jumps to the top of the queue) - they said there was no point starting straight away as there is a 2 week break coming up.
Our daughter was a Rainbow in the UK but the ruling is not the same as the Scouts so she has to go on a waiting list.
