Broadband modem...

I know this is probably a REALLY stupid question, but am I right in thinking that my Broadband modem here in the UK will be useless in Oz??

Well, this'll probably be of no use, but seeing as noone else has answered yet :D

Our DUTCH one works fine here.

:)

Nope, its not a stupid question. The technology is the same. The only problem might be with the filters you use on your UK phone connections won't fit the Oz phone conections. But having looked at the actual broadband modems here in Brissie, they are the same, so the modem will probably work. You just need to buy new filters when you get here, oh and new software for the Bigpond/optus/primus/ozemail or whatever service you go for.

Cheers,
JTL

Oh really, Simone?? So did you have to buy new leads and stuff though? Because the plugs that go into the phone line are different....

Re: Broadband modem...

The only potential problem is you may not have the tick mark on your modem (Aussie equivalent of BABT approval), and technically you would be in breach of the telecoms regs here.

Mind you, the chances of being found out are remote, but if you ever did have a fault with your phone and had engineers in......

Check out the Whirlpool forums to see what sort of ADSL modems are used here, maybe yours is amongst them

Presumably you bought the modem - ours is "owned" by NTL - I don't think they would like it if we took it with us :D

ADSL modems will work here. You will have to change a some settings as Australia runs on a different VPI and VCI.

That doesnt mean a thing to me...so I guess I will have to take your word for it. What settings do you need to change? Is it on the modem? or on the computer?

Depends on the modem/router. On my router I open a webpage and configure it from there. I had a crappy Alcatel stingray and I had to edit the registry to get that one going. Your new ISP should give you the settings. You will also have a new username and password.

I have no idea what the settings mean are but I know they are different depending on the country. On my router I just change change the entry and hit apply It is just a matter of finding how to change them. The whirlpool site is a good start or if you are with swiftdsl they have a forum with a section for each router/modem.

We've got Blueyonder Broadband and were with BT. We paid a fair amout to have it fitted but I'm 90% sure they still own the surfboard. Just double check that you own yours 1st - 'cos we were never given that option to buy!

We paid £50 for the modem and the filters....we didnt need to have anything fitted. We had a 2 week wait on the exchange where we lived to be bought up to broadband standards and then we were online....

Hi all,

Jumping in on this one as I wouldn't have thought of packing the modem when I finally put my laptop to bed for the trip... mine's a BT Voyager USB modem, I paid AOL for the package (so assume it's mine) but no idea how to make the modem work in Aus.

When I get back online, will the system detect the settings and prompt me to change whatever I need to change?

Check the whirlpool site as I am sure I have seen mentions of the BT voyager there. I doubt it will detect the new settings.
