Yeah they know you are in Australia from your IP address. They will have blocked access to anyone who doesn't have a UK IP address.

You can usually circumvent such IP checks by using a proxy. However - proxys are often overloaded with lots of users and aren't generally much use for things like streaming video.

Smaller country (population-wise), less competition - bottom line you'll end up paying more for your bandwidth. Competition in the UK is so intense that you can get properly unlimited connections on ADSL2 pipes for 20-odd quid a month. Here you'll find most ISPs have an upper-teir of packages that top out at around the 40Gb range, but with the better ones you also get 'free' bandwidth outside quota during off-peak hours. You're looking at between $90 - $120 for a 40Gb package. In the UK I was regularly downloading 4Gb DVDs on an 8Mb connection, but it was often downloading for the sake of it - here I'm much pickier about what I snag. That said, in my new house I'll have a much better connection and look forward to some heavy torrent activity. Just don't make the mistake of signing up with one of the telcos (Optus, Telstra, AAPT etc) for your broadband.

Its usually enough for me. iinet do packages with higher download limits but I am buggered if I am paying $100+ per month for internet access.

Does Oz have decent terrestrial TV channels? We will be travelling around Oz when we land, so thought we would buy a cheap LCD and hook it up the old fashioned way - TV Ariel!

Aussie terrestrial tv is woeful, absolutely terrible. Unless you like rugby, AFL or American medical dramas. Prime time tv on the commercial networks (7, 9 and 10) makes you think you're living in the US. Practically every show between about 7pm to 11pm is an American show - you know, CSI, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, Lost, Grey's anatomy.......jesus.

My landlord won't let me get foxtel, so if i watch tv it tends to be SBS or ABC - at least that way i get to see some footie on SBS and some English shows on ABC. There are one or two decent Aussie shows on, but you've got to look hard to find them - i like that Chaser's War on everything on ABC for example, but it depends on your sense of humour.

Beg to differ but those American shows keep us sane... :scared: would hate to think we had only Aus stuff and if the soccer started over here the schedule would be buggered (like in UK, the series thats been on for weeks stopped for the footy) on top of too many adverts.
