You can usually circumvent such IP checks by using a proxy. However - proxys are often overloaded with lots of users and aren't generally much use for things like streaming video.

Does Oz have decent terrestrial TV channels? We will be travelling around Oz when we land, so thought we would buy a cheap LCD and hook it up the old fashioned way - TV Ariel!

Aussie terrestrial tv is woeful, absolutely terrible. Unless you like rugby, AFL or American medical dramas. Prime time tv on the commercial networks (7, 9 and 10) makes you think you're living in the US. Practically every show between about 7pm to 11pm is an American show - you know, CSI, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, Lost, Grey's anatomy.......jesus.
My landlord won't let me get foxtel, so if i watch tv it tends to be SBS or ABC - at least that way i get to see some footie on SBS and some English shows on ABC. There are one or two decent Aussie shows on, but you've got to look hard to find them - i like that Chaser's War on everything on ABC for example, but it depends on your sense of humour.
