Re: British Exodus
Perhaps it's a case of familiarity breeding contempt? In other words, wherever you go, the longer you stay there the further the rose-tinted specs will slip and the more faults you might find with your chosen country. I don't think that's specific to moving to Australia.
We all go with dreams of what it will be like, and I'm assuming that everyone goes hoping that things will be better, or they'd just stay put. Doesn't mean they hate wherever it is that they are leaving, just that they believe that somewhere else might be better, for whatever reasons. Attitude, open-mindedness, a willingness to fit in - all these things will undoubtedly help anyone migrating. But maybe, once the novelty has worn off, the grass will seem less green on your chosen side of the fence.... [Do I get the prize for the most adages and metaphors?;) :D ] |
Re: British Exodus
maybe Bundy - the key I guess that you'll never know until you get here..some people have a better idea than others - you can never be sure...
Have to admit there is nowhere else I could contemplate living seriously right now; if you can seriously, and I mean seriously (after living there for a while) cotemplate somewhere else it must have something going for it to make it worth a try. Sometimes, I say why Australia, but then I look at the other possibles, for me, South Africa, NZ and Canada and actually, they don't get a look in.... BM |

I'm seeking comment on this matter, however brief, such as: why did you leave? What do you miss, what don't you miss? Anyone fed up and going home? If anyone wants to get in touch I'm at [email protected] - or post your thoughts here. Full names are preferable if that's okay. We're aiming for a serious piece that addresses the phenomenon.
I will also need a couple of case studies - that is, people willing to have a short interview and potentially a photograph. If that's you, then get in touch. Many thanks for all your help. Yours, Oliver My oh my, what a can of worms you have opened Oliver... We have only been in Brisbane for 1 week and I can quite honestly say that the last one out of the Uk, switch the light off! Ok, Australia has GST at 10%, but we have also have the sun, climate, standard of living, pace of life, nicer environment to raise children and the Aussies actually ask you how you are! When was the last time a Brit asked you that in the general course of conversation? At the end of the day, I personally think the reason that there is a mass exodus from the Uk is that it is over populated, high cost of living, poor education system and the Government leaves alot to be desired (I have yet to suss out the Aus Gov)...I s'pose at the end of the day, it is what you make it. :D |

Maybe that would be worth an article in a UK newspaper. Doubt we'll see it though. This proposed article seems to be riding onthe back of the plethora of 'life in the sun' type programmes which abound on UK TV at the moment. G |

The numbers have changed very little for years. Less British go to Australia now than years ago. They are also in the minority of migrants to Australia. G |
Re: press request
hmmmmm...My general view on this whole endless topic is that I don't see the point in actually getting too political, or ridiculing someone for their honest opinion, especially when they allow that they may not be sure...there was no arrogance or presumption there..the poster above conceded they weren't sure about the Aussie system..I don't even follow it myself. it's all very samey. Many political parties are just 'tendering for your contract' - gone are the days of party lines and historic beliefs..ie New Labour, Tories all the same.
sometimes a subjective opinion is worth a thousand words....most political systems are all a bit of a muchness really...at the end of the day, we all get taxed etc..its the fringe benefits of where YOU choose to live that will swing it. In a job of similar package and compensation, the fringe benefits may swing it. For you and for noone else. I personally believe there is NOT a mass exodus from the UK. And the figures will probably support it. If someone wants to leave, they will. BM |

I can't give statistics on this but it would be interesting to see from a survey; after immigration had took place, which nationality's ventured back home. Possibly more ozzies go back as per uk. Very mariginal, I know, but I have known many ozzies to say they would never live here for good and that once they had families they would return to oz as it was better for kids.
