Yes, I was really pleased for her too - what an achievement!

(The only problem is, every time I see her on TV/hear her on the radio, I keep thinking she's that woman on 'Dead Ringers' who impersonates her so brilliantly...)

Anya.

Wadyawant - Illuka Yanupingu and his stringy bark tri-hull team?

Boatspeed is one of the premier boat building yards in Australia run by Peter and Sari Ulrich - Peter was involved with the construction of the high-tech 18' Skiffs and Sari is only the fifth woman to have trained as a boat builder in Australia. Boatspeed have constructed many racing and cruising boats over the years including the Hugh Welbourn designed 'Bols' (93' Maxi) and 'Heaven Can Wait' (50' IRM) and Bruce Farr designed 'StingX' (49' IMS) and 'Ragamuffin' (50' IMS).

Congratulations to Ellen, again.

However, I was wondering why this has been posted on the Australia forum? Shouldn't this be in the Lounge for all expats to enjoy? (Also, I can't see the connection with Oz, apart from the boat builders.)

Regards
Alistair

She swam behind all the way?

A day of doldrums or two and all the sleeplessness and efforts of many would have been in vain.

Can't find much news about this on Aussie news websites. There is an item on www.news.com.au & it does not mention the Aussie built boat.

Err, designed by John Bradfield (born Brisbane, educated University of Sydney), built by all Aussie labour. Painted by Paul Hogan.

Yes, I think Jan Ravens is the lady, "I have been stuck in Tesco's car park for over 10 days now . . . I can't take much more (break into tears) . . . I can't even open a tin of beans now" Fab stuff!!!

Serious a darn good achievement for Ellen. go girl.

l did'nt know what it was you were talking about untill l looked it up on the British internet newspapers because it did'nt make the news in OZ and l doubt most other countries. Any lunatic can risk their lives sailing around the world in a little tub l don't understand what all the fuss is about.
Remember Terry Bulimore and a couple of other Poms who capsided their boats of the coast of WA and we Aussie Taxpayers had to pay millions to rescue these lunatics.

Sorry but l don't understand what the great achievement is
Have'nt hundreds of people already sailed around the world. l guess with a lack of international sporting victories you need something, even a woman
sailing around the world in a little tub to maintain national pride. :D

Well said! We love Ellen- what a woman. We should be able to celebrate her achievement without someone belittling it. People may have sailed around the world before but no woman has done it faster. :)

It says on news.com:

"MacArthur was virtually unknown in Britain but a household name in France, where great sailors are venerated, when she set off 71 days ago."

Kay Cottee (nee McLaren) is probably not a household name, Robin Knox-Johnston is (first woman and man to circumnavigate the world in a boat):

I'm not surprised it didn't make the news, the aussie media is so inward looking.BTW i'd rather be a pom than a LA (Little American)
