Please could anyone who has visited both of these cities tell me how they compare/differ, as a place to live.
Having visited Perth, I think I would find it too remote to live in and too quiet for 3 teenagers that are used to lively nightlife.
Price wise - they appear to be similar, is this so?
Also, any ideas why they are so much cheaper than Sydney and Melbourne. Isd it just because they are the main business centres?
Cheers

Property in Perth is at least a third if not half the price of Brisbane because loads of peeple are moving up to Brisbane from the south.

I dont know why people keep saying saying Perth is remote,For christ sake its the biggest territory in australia, theres so much here ,and i can honestly say, that even if we lived in brisbane,we probally would not travel to sydney every month or the neighbouring cities all the time, back home the furthest id go in a sinlge week was a few miles away for a nite out,or the coast on a nice day or down the motorway to leeds for shopping.................Perth is huge, and theres soooo much here...houses are much cheaper,....thats not why we came though,it has everything we need, and we will probally only go to sydney or melbourne on a holiday,Its great livin for the kids, and the nite life is fab for us adults,
Its has a laid back feel, and im starting to relise what WA means WAIT AWHILE,cos people here r in no rush, back in the uk it took 45 mins to get to school, and it was only a few miles away,my husband spent half his workin day on the m1,so for us its perfect......Wages seem to be lower, but then again ur morgage is lower ,so its all weighs up...........Its what u want at the end of the day,i think some people think that perth is a bloody emty place with a town here and there
And its so not like that,i had my reservations at first.....But its a great place to be

We love Perth's climate and the fact that it is quieter, cleaner and the smallness of the city. There are some lovely areas North and South of the city and lots to do. We are going for our 4th reccie over Christmas and New Year and hope to move for good 2005/2006.

Excellent question, I had never thought of Perth because it on the otherside. But it sounds idilic. good climate more jobs cheaper house but still got the amenities especially for the teens.

I love Perth although I live in Brisbane and the major reason is it's isolation. House prices are cheaper in Perth (I'd say about 10-20%), it's got fantastic beaches within 20 minutes of CBD, great public transport, good shopping in CBD and surburban shopping centres. I'd say the night life is about as good as Brisbane (but Brisbane has GC less than an hour away which is the holiday capital of Oz).
Now you draw a 2,000kms radius from Brisbane and you cover Cairns, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide and these are the places I like to visit, along with a lot in between. Do the same for Perth and you don't even get to Adelaide (Perth Adelaide 3,000kms).
Then you've got the GBR in QLD (I know you've got the Ningaloo Reef in WA but you just cannot compare Coral Bay or Exmouth with the QLD GBR cities) which has major cities every few hundred KMS.
I think WA is great for a holiday but I just couldn't live their. Loads of people on here enjoy living in Perth and as a city it has everything and very well packaged but for me it's too isolated.

Doesn't it work both ways - people living in Perth can easily go on holiday to the East Coast - ok this will mean an internal flight but you would fly from the UK to Europe on holiday so what is the difference?

Brisbane:
Boring and boiling hot and humid in Summer. A suburban sprawl that laughingly refers to itself as a city. Bugger all nightlife, unless RSL type clubs are your thing.
Perth:
Isolated, boring and boiling hot and dry in Summer. A suburban sprawl that laughingly refers to itself as a city. Bugger all nightlife, unless RSL type clubs are your thing.
They are cheap due to the backward nature of them. Crap employment oppurtunities and isolation (Perth) seal their reputation is dull backwaters with low wages.

You're back!!
Your description of Perth I have to disagree with. Have you been there? Or is it just what you've read? What are RSL type clubs out of curiosity?
I know it's isolated where in Australia isn't? Everywhere is a plane away or a long car journey from city to city or place to place.
Job front looks very healthy from my research for my field, Disability Services Commission.
Lower wages yes, lower house prices yes, without trying to sound like a broken record, or like you, it's all comparative.

I travelled in all the Aussie states except WA. So I cannot really comment too much on Perth. Although most Aussies I know find Perth dull, so I assume that if I found the rest of the country boring, then Perth will be even worse.
