The places very close to the city with some life, if you are looking for active streets, are West End, Paddington, New Farm/Teneriffe, Fortitude Valley, Milton/Rosalie. Kangaroo Point is full of apartments and close to the city but a bit light on shops.
A little further out and quieter but still with shops, restaurants and a couple of cafes etc there is Auchenflower, Bulimba, Toowong, Taringa, Indooroopilly, Nundah Village, Ashgrove, Albion, Wilston, Newmarket, Coorparoo etc. Maybe you could check them out when you arrive? |

Toowong has some of the most prestigious schools in Brisbane: Brisbane Boys College, Stuartholme. Also has a selective government school for high achievers: http://qasmt.eq.edu.au/wcmss/ http://www.qldacademies.eq.edu.au/ Other schools include: http://www.stignatiustoowong.qld.edu.au/ http://www.toowongss.eq.edu.au/ourschool.htm Very close to the University of Queensland. Many good state and private schools in surrounding areas as well (St Lucia, Indooroopilly). |

Is your daughter young enough to still use children's parks, swings etc? If so, Toowong/Taringa has lots of apartments around Perrin Park - it is a lovely park with childrens swings in a green peaceful area - search for Josling St in google maps. Only caveat is that because it is near university of queensland the apartments may have higher rate of students renting. From Perrin Park a steep walk up a hill brings you to Toowong village and train station. (there is a another flat way to walk there) http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=jos...,0.003264&z=19 |

Overall, yes. But west end would still be fine unless you were unlucky.

Re: brisbane mobile/ internet
Toowong being close to he uni has a lot of students - its correspondingly 'lively' (although not as lively as West End). You migh find that theres more 'basic' rental housing in Toowong to cater for that student market and if your in units you might want to be careful you dont end up in a student block subjected to constant party noise.
If you still want good schools and just 10 minutes from City and good shops then Ashgrove might be better suited to a young family. Its little quieter (with some great parks for little kids not plagued by drunken homeless undesirables) but still very easy to to get to city. |

Doesn't have the best reputation...was talking to a stall owner at the market on the weekend and he said since his 3 service was switched to roam onto Vodafone first instead of Telstra it has been rubbish....don't have any first hand experience with that though?

If renting another place to consider is near Rosalie Village. I lived with my then 4yo there until recently and we loved it. Great govt primary school (Milton State School), lovely little village with restaurants, cafes, deli, butcher, cinema etc...flat and easy to walk around, safe with people on the street until late at night. Close to Baroona Rd shops with late hours IGA supermarket, medical facilities etc. Close to Park Road cafe/restaurant district. Milton train station takes you to CBD in 4 mins. Small 3 bedroom modernised character house was $520/week including gardening (you could get an apartment cheaper). Also has a fantastic park next to school and village. You could live here without a car. Save on electricity in small home. Save on transport costs. No need for private school fees. Walk to the CBD in 30 mins or less. http://www.ourbrisbane.com/files/ima...d/IMG_1938.JPG http://www.ourbrisbane.com/files/ima...d/IMG_1897.JPG http://www.ourbrisbane.com/files/ima...d/IMG_1902.JPG http://www.ourbrisbane.com/files/ima...d/IMG_1705.JPG http://national.atdw.com.au/multimed...2_rosalie4.jpg http://national.atdw.com.au/multimed...2_rosalie3.jpg http://national.atdw.com.au/multimed...2_rosalie2.jpg |

I haven't really had any problems. The fact that you can use data on Vodafone is a major bonus versus switching to Telstra.

yes, on average houses in better condition.....but the family houses in Toowong may cost more to rent than the more run down places in West End...really depends. Purchasing is cheaper though - or you get more for your money.
