http://www.balhouse.com/

The rates were in my budget ($50/ night if you stay at least one week) but the reviews on Trip Advisor and some other sites have completely put me off this place and I have decided to increase my budget by at least 50%.

Location would put me off that one.......not the best area......

I am looking for short-term furnished accomodation (say for 10 days to 2 weeks) starting 2nd May. This should ideally be in the CBD and close to restaurants/ cafes. My budget - $75/ night. Should I go back to my dreaming now?

Jokes apart, I am hoping that a couple of weeks would be sufficient for me to scout around and find a rental. My research also threw up the following:

http://www.auspitality.com.au/

Auspitality seems nice but I have no idea how far this is from the CBD, eating places and public transport links. Any inputs or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thornlands - long way out from the CBD, much more of a residential suburb.

I also found something which is above my budget but might be helpful for alzo amongst others:

http://www.questbridgewater.com.au/

I don't know how far Kangaroo Point is from the CBD. Any pointers in the right direction from folks in the know other be very helpful!

Cheers!

Bond

Much more central - with what you have given as your requirements go for that.

Sounds good, if I have to ferry to & fro the CBD multiple times during the day (say 4 times), how much should I budget for the ferry ride on a daily basis?

Thanks for the input, I'm quite tempted to forget about my original budget and go with Quest (albeit for lesser number of days) - their rooms are quite impressive!

Have a look at http://www.translink.com.au/ and get a Go card - cheapest way to travel

Get a Go Card. 30% off per journey, further 50% off if you use it more than 10 times per week. $1.15 per trip maybe.

The ferry between Kangaroo Point (Holman St or Thornton St) and the CBD will cost you $2.30 each way using a GoCard stored value travel card.

Or $1.15 if you use it more than ten times per week. ;)

In 'the olden days' the price used to drop after 6 trips.

I often used to not pay at all on the cross river ferry because swiping off often used to go through as cancel swipe on for some reason.

Thanks everyone for the advice, Go Cards seem to be pretty useful as well as economical!

How do people afford to live in these areas? Not going to have much spending money left after paying for somewhere to live, food, travel costs etc.

They are especially useful when you get on a bus with a faulty machine, as they have to let you travel for free (I should know, five free trips out of ten this week......)

Depends on their income ....... and a lot of people in CBD apartments have their living expenses paid by their companies.

I'll confess to have never used a GoCard but based on the publicity material that should be the same price. If you used your GoCard ten times your trips would have been half price? So you paid the same even though you only swiped 5 times.

No, because the 11th trip and onwards is half price....not the first 10.

Back in 2008 they discounted every trip from the first one onwards so that it worked out the same as getting half price after the 6th if you did 10 per week. The 11th trip onwards thing was an additional bonus.

They've now increased paper tickets dramatically to force everyone's hand.

Not sure if you're still looking for somewhere but I've stopped in the Skyline appartments and it was walking distance to the CBD.

http://www.qresorts.com.au/Default.aspx

Seem a bit cheaper than some of your other places. I found them to be comfortable/nothing fancy but enough to get by.

I asked them & I think if you contact direct them had better long term rates than those quoted on the website.

Good luck will be doing the same in August ourselves!
