Will most electrical applicances from UK work in Oz?.
I was thinking particularly about TV and Video. I guess phones have different connections in Oz, so I doubt that they'll work. Please no highly technical or anorak responses! Cheers

Most things will work but you need a plug adaptor. The voltage itself is fine, but
the plug arrangement is different.

HOWEVER there are problems with TV and Video, because the sound system used is
slightly different. The full name of the TV standard is PAL B-G, and from my limited
understanding, the difference is in the UK you use Nicam digital stereo, which we
don't have here. Consult your local anorak for full details

There are no problems bringing video tapes across.

Are your plugs like US plugs (2 pin flat) or like European ones (2 pin round)?

Well, they're more like the US ones - flat pins (sometimes 3 of them though..).
However, the US 2 flat pins are parallel, whereas in Australia/New Zealand, they are
at an angle, so your US plugs will *NOT* fit the sockets here.

Regards,

Michael

Neither. They are a variety peculiar to Australia and NZ. They are angular flat pins
something like this:

You'll need a special adapter. In an emergency you could bend the pins of a US double
insulated plug.

BTW Anorak is not a word used much in Australia. not quite sure what the equivalent
is in this context

Thanks Les & Michael. That means the adapters I have won't work. Anyone know where I
can buy an Oz adapter in the UK...?

My sister lives in London, and has had trouble finding adapters for her (Australian)
appliances. But they are plentiful once you get here - expect to pay A$8-10.

I bought one in John Lewis this week-end, but it was on the "GO Travel Emporium"
stand which you often find in luggage or travel shops. It consists of two pieces -
one for European round pin, and the other with rotating flat pins allowing use in USA
or OZ/NZ. It was £5.95.

The list's endless. Any decent electrical store, Woolies, DIY stores, the
supermarkets...... They're cheap and very easy to find.

You can get both. For example, see www.dse.com.au and type in M7303 under Cat No. The
picture on the website clearly shows it can convert UK (and other) plugs to fit in
our sockets. M7312 does the reverse and is for Australians going to the UK.

I think they're like gunzels (here we go again!), but they're not only found
following trains. 'Boffin', 'tech-head', 'geek' or similar are reasonable
equivalents.

That applies to what my sister was looking for, but both are plentiful at that price
when you get here.
