Default Bricklaying in Brisbane vs Bricklaying in Perth

Please help. We had almost definitely made up our minds that we would settle in Brisbane, but yet again we are swaying slightly towards Perth. Please can you Builders out there in Brisbane and Perth please tell me what you life is like in Perth or Brisbane. Good and Bad.

Hi Tina

Sorry I can't help with Brissy. I've heard tales of Perth being a real boom town for Brickies - plenty work over there at the minute from what people say. My husband is a Bricky and we had to come to Victoria because of Visa requirements. Apparently there is a huge tradie shortage but we've really struggled in Vic. Wages are much lower than the UK. Like I said though Perth seems to be the place to earn at the minute for Brickies.

Wish you luck

Hi Tina, will watch this post with interest, hubby is brickie. We are undecided on Perth or Brisbane areas. Although more swayed towards Perth, seems to be more brick built housing. Housing prices seem to be cheaper in Brisbane than Perth but I think we'll reccie both areas

Hiya I'm here !!!

Well my hubby is doing fab brickying here. Houses are brick and not timber so a bit more work for him and, as he's used to two storeys and the Ozzies aren't, there's more work for him.

He got work on commercial buildings on a day rate ($270) in the first week and he stayed there for a month or so to get some skills in how they build and also to get a letter of employment so we could get a 'normal' mortgage. Whe he left there his wage had risen to $290 a day but they offered him $310 to stay. He's now out on his own with another British brickie who has 2 years behind him so my OH is learning the way Ozzie houses are built as it is a bit different. He now earns $1 a brick and is earning good money. He hasn't lost any time yet though so time will tell. Our plan is to rake the money in now and wack it on the extremely high mortgage before any bubbles burst, just in case.

My understanding is that work is easier to get and earn here in WA but that house prices etc are lower in the Eastern states so it may be swings and roundabouts. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll ask him !

Hi Wendy

I am hoping that them bricklayers will take the time to reply. Do you have any family in Australia. We have no contacts out there and have never been. I think it makes sense to have a look at both areas before settling. When are you hoping to visit and when are you planning to move out there?

but that game was a complete travesty in that the guys from Perth were using breezeblocks, whereas the Brizzies were using proper bricks!

In any event the Ref was blind...

I'm also a bricklayer but havent been to Brisbane or Perth. Hope to be in Perth however for June next year -looked into all places in Oz and Perth definately looks the best. If you are going to travel half way around the world you might as well go to the place with the best money.

Cant wait to get there. It just takes that long.....

PS - working in East Kilbride, Scotland at the moment - it was snowing :scared: :scared: and 2 degrees today - get me out of here.

Thanks Gordon & Laura,

I know everything you say makes sense.

By the way working today in South of England. Walls falling down all over the place due to the strong winds. (not the dodgy english builders)

What a bugger Ah having to decide between tropical Brisbane and hot dry Perth.

Best of luck with your move.

I'm hoping ot be in Perth in Dec/Jan, I'm in I.T. at the minute but I would really like to get in to bricklaying, god only knows how I'm going to go about it though as I can't really afford to get an apprenticeship as we'll need some decent money coming in from the start as we'll be first time buyers out there.

Any ideas on good ways of getting in to bricklaying I'd be grateful to hear them?

I was thinking of maybe applying for a labourers job to start with and working my way on from there.

Labouring is a good way to go as most of them will start to lay. A lot of labourers are on $220 a day so expected to do a bit of laying for that money. But if you want to be taught on the job it's slightly different as a lot of brickies won't teach as it loses them money. But OH says he would expect you to get there half an hour early, get everything set up and get ahead of yourself, have a set of tools and, in a good week, he'd train. There again, if you are a really good and fast labourer he'd have no problems training as you'd be more useful to him then.
