Living in Queensland not Victoria have just looked up the QLD gov site regarding Tow Truck regulation

Max charge for first 50km $279.95
extra per km over $5.60

So to quote what the state government maximum or whatever charges are bears no relationship to what we were actually charged which was in real life $70 for 34 km although they did say this distance was pushing it for the money.

These guys had jobs before picking us up and were straight off to another one after and gave the impression they would be busy all day happily picking up $70 a time.

It obviously makes sense to get a price first as they would have been within their rights to charge the $279.95

If you are in NSW then I reckon you cant go past NRMA premium care. I took it out after having to pay towage for my new car from Gundagai to Tumut and havent looked back. They even towed our very elderly car (which had been ultra reliable to that point) from 1km down a dirt track off a dirt road 50km from anywhere with a name that meant it had a convenience store, to Canberra and it cost us nothing - they even offered a hire car but we didnt need one as it happened. I know it costs more but it has been great for us.

Edited to say, looking at the list of things they do, they certainly towed our old car over 250km back to Canberra - didnt think they had changed the regs but even so, it has definitely been worth it for us after 32 years of trouble free motoring we have had a couple of glitches in the past few years.

That link shows possible example costs of:

For example, your car breaks down travelling from Sydney to Canberra and we can't get it going within 24 hours; we will arrange for you:

1 night's accommodation $100 (inc. GST)
1 day's car hire $100 (inc. GST)
Relocation of your car to your repairer of choice $870 (inc. GST)
Total benefit to you $1070 (inc. GST)

The NRMA site seems as over complicated as RACQ.

The $3000 dollar major breakdown cover over 100km from home seems pretty good though and was exactly what we wanted but RACQ did not seem to offer this unless it was hidden away somewhere.

Yes, we have the NRMA premium care on our camper van, because of inter-state potential towing and travel costs. But its a Toyota...and they dont breakdown!
